"completed" 1841 census help please - Edgbaston reservoir

Post by expat66 »

Can any of you 'eagle-eyed' experts find the 1841 census for the Edgbaston reservoir lodge?

My great great great grandfather was the lodgekeeper... George ECCLESHALL ( born 1797 Forton, Staffs).. I don't know what year he got the job though!

I found every census from 1851 to his death in 1870 but just can't find the 1841 one.

Did 'district numbers' change from one census to the next.. ie.. The lodge was in district 12 of Ladywood in 1851 but doesn't seem to be in district 12 in 1841?

If he was the lodgekeeper by 1841 , I would expect George's household to look something like....

George ECCLESHALL( born 1797, Staffs) lodgekeeper
Mary ECCLESHALL( born 1797 Staffs)
Eliza ECCLESHALL(born 1822 Staffs)
Joseph ECCLESHALL(born 1828 Staffs)
Samuel ECCLESHALL( born 1829 B'ham)
Thomas ECCLESHALL(born 1830 B'ham)
Oliver ECCLESHALL(born 1835 B'ham)
Richard ECCLESHALL(born 1837 B'ham)
Hannah ECCLESHALL(born 1838 B'ham)

The lodge was built in 1827
...so I don't know if George was the first lodgekeeper or if there was someone else there first?
from 1828 onwards his children all appear to have been born in Birmingham ( based on the info. on the censuses which follow)...so I am assuming they are resident in Birmingham by 1841

Hope that all makes sense
many Thanks

Hi Expat, if your GtX3 Grandfather was a Lodge Keeper he should be listed in the Trade Directories, not sure which ones covered Edgbaston, but there were a few such as Whites Trade Directory (think that was 1835), Pigots Directory (1828,) there is a link for these Directories under the 'Links' Section. HTH Linell.

In the 1849 Whites Diectory of Birmingham, he is listed as the Lodge Porter, Reservoir Lodge.

So I would say he arrived sometime bwtween 1841 and 1849 and was promoted to Lodge Keeper between 1849 and 1851.

There is no sign of any of his many children in the 1841 census.

He is not listed in the 1850 Slater's Royal Directory of Warwickshire.

In 1861 the lodge is on Reservoir Road.

Looking at Resevoir Road in 1841, there is no Lodge listed.

Lots of well off people though. Tea Merchants, Wine Merchants etc

In the 1851 census the lodge is called Reyesevoyor and there is also a cottage by that name but I think that was just a spelling error since the 1849 directory calls it Resevoir.

Thanks Mark,
That's given me a bit more info. than I had.

This may be a case of the surname being so badly transcribed that it is impossible to find... ECCLESHALL gets mispelt so often!

I haven't really explored whether they might have been living near the wife's family?
.... George ECCLESHALL'S wife was Mary PENNY... she was born around 1797 and according to census born in Smethwick ( I haven't identified her parents yet)
George and Mary married 19 May 1823 at St. Martin's Church, Birmingham

George was from Forton.. his parents.... John ECCLESHALL (b.1762) and Elizabeth PATRICK (b.1760) had married in Forton in 1778

I don't know what year George left Forton and moved to Birmingham?
... maybe they show up in the Smethwick area somewhere?

I have had a lot of nightmares chasing up Eccleshall and Ecclestones over the years for a Dodd cousin.

With TheGenealogist I can search any census just based on Given Names and/or using wildcards for the Surname.

I can assure you, they are not to be found.

You can ask members of the The Birmingham History forum to do lookups for you. It is worthwhile getting them to check the actual parish registers for any Warwickshire marriages.

Thanks Mark,
.... yes those ECCLESHALLS certainly present a challenge!..... and I think they must have been in hiding or something in 1841! :?

I have just joined the Birmingham History Forum so I will have to get myself organised and sort out some marriages for lookup.... I have loads in my tree which need further investigation!
