ARC TBC..................Whittons in Oz

Post by expat66 »

I have been contacted by a Whitton in Australia and am trying to confirm whether her Whittons are related to my Wittons.
The Wittons I have are all Black Country, but this lady's ancestor was born in Sheffield. I think his father may have been from Gospelend, Staffs. though?

Frederick Whitton apparently emigrated to Australia about 1923
His father was William Whitton born abt 1879 Sheffield
William had married a Gertrude Horten in 1900 and on his marriage certificate I have been told that his father is listed as John, puddler deceased.

There is this census for 1881 ....
Carlise St East 3 No 5 CT, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield, Yorkshire
John Witton, 43,head,married, puddler steel works, born Gospelend, Staffs
Ann, 37, wife, born Bilston
Elizabeth,13,daughter, born Goldegreen,Staffs
Ellen,8,daughter, born Leabrook,Staffs
Agnes,4,daughter, born Sheffield
William,1,son,born Sheffield
Job,1month, son, born Sheffield

So if that is the right William, then he could be connected to the Black Country Wittons

His father John may well be the John Witton on BCC here....

http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/fa ... ton-Family

I suppose we could do with tracking down a marriage for John and wife Ann?....
and also earlier censuses?

Usual problems with whether this is Whitton or Witton

Any thoughts?
Thankyou
Expat

Some more info. from Oz

The Certified Copy of an Entry of Marriage confirmed that Will was John & Annie's son, as the address on the certificate, 129 Gower St is the same in the 1901, 1891, census even tho Will is not at that address.
He & Gertie were already married in 1901

Will is at the Blue Coat Boys Charity School Sheffield in 1891. The rest of the family was living at Gower St, which she thinks might have been a boarding house, that the girl's helped Annie with after John died.
John was blind in one eye in the 1881 census. She thinks he died around 1884 after Job was born (1881). She found a John Witten in the death index abt that date.
John & Annie moved from Staffordshire before Will was born.

There were alot of William Whitton's living in Sheffield at the time & a few Gertude Hortens.... so she hopes she has linked up the right ones, as no one in Oz seems to know anything of William's life before Gertrude.

Marriage info...
Gertrude's father & sister (Thomas & Annie) were witnesses. date married was 24/12/1900 at St Barnabas, Sheffield, by Alfred Wood. William was a Boiler Fireman & John was a Puddler (deceased)

William Whitton - in 1891 census was spelt Witten, other census' it is Witton on one census it is Wilton???!!!(transcribing error), on the marriage certificate it is Whitton, which is the spelling her family use.
There are no signatures, everything is written in the same hand writing.
