*Arc tbc 24 hrs* --------Verifying a rumour

Post by brickwalls »

There is a rumour in my family that my father's grandfather was in the Orange Order, but none of my living relatives can either confirm or deny this, as they themselves are only aware of the rumour.

Is there a way I could find out definitively whether or not he was indeed in the Order? If so, what sort of information would I need to provide?

Hi,

Sorry about that, I'd lost the link to this forum. If it weren't for an email I received I would have lost out on this help.

I've lost contact with that side of my family, so the most I can provide unfortunately is rough dates.

My father was born in 1957 in Manchester, to a man called Harry Johnston. Harry was married in 1946, however he served in the Royal Navy as a Submariner, so we're working on a conservative birth year of around 1925. That is as far back as I can get at the minute. I'm currently searching the BMD records for information, however information isn't too forthcoming.

EDIT: Found a possible record for Harry. Born Manchester S in 1926 to a woman who's maiden name was Honey.

Further possible information: Only marriage registration I can find between 1900 and 1926 is between Walter Johnston and Unknown Honey was in 1913 in Chorlton.

I'm afraid not.

I've sent an email off to a relative who might be able to help, although I'm not sure of when I'd get a reply.

Thank you very much Jimmy, that's helped a lot :D

Just noticed, her name appears to have changed some time between 1891 and 1901. Is this common?

I think she is Nellie in 1911, but I don't have full access. Helen was another form of Nellie.

Births Sep 1887.
HONEY Nelly. Chorlton. 8c. 840.
