A poorhouse and missing father!

Post by Fatman »

In the 1851 census, Elizabeth Cupit (b ~1812 Leicestershire, England) and her 4 children are listed at Bingham Union Poorhouse as Paupers.

Her eldest son Thomas (b 1842 Bingham, Notts) , goes on to marry Elizabeth Nichols as shown on the 1871 census.

I cant find any of the family on the 1861 census at all, nor Elizabeth on the 1841 census before the kids are born.

And where would their father have been? I presume dead?

Are there any other ways I could check this up?

The marriage was in 3rd quarter of 1841 so they wouldn't appear together in 1841 census -- then he was dead by 1851 so she could have married again by 1861 and changed the children's names for that census.

Hmmm - the childrens births are listed as Chesterfield in FreeBMD.

Deaths ~ 1850 Chesterfield, lists a Benjamin and there is a marriage between a Benjamin Cupit and Mary also registered in Chesterfield....
Theres also a John death, and a John marriage listed in Chesterfield....

Think Its prob between those 2 but might need to order the cert to be sure!
