you need to add his occupation where born and same for his wife and kids as this will help with the search as there a lot of ben smiths about ?
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Apologies

Benjamin smith born Gateshead Durham. Miner.
Mary smith born seaham harbour, Durham

I assume they are married before 1882 as this is when their first daughter is born

You may be assuming wrong, there is a 10 year gap between Mary and William.

1901.
Benjamin Smith 40. Coal screener.
Mary Smith 43.
Mary H Smith 19.
William Smith 9.

Robert Smith 6.
Norman Smith 3.
Wilfred Smith 1.

Its possible that is her in 1891, before she met Ben Smith and that Mary born 1882 is Ben's Daughter, and both having the surname Smith they may not have married.
