Oh looks like Mary was poorly in 1901. Lawrence is with his Uncle, Henry Handy in South Shields and M E Oram, married, 49, draper, own account , North Shields, Lunatic in Newcastle upon Tyne City Lunatic Asylum. Theres a possible death in 1919 for her.

Just checked marraige for William Henry Oram and it is William Henry Oram as father master mariner

I am confused (as usual ) is W.H. Oram as father master mariner w h oram snr-that would explain my query as to why he is obviously still around in 1883 as in 1891 she had 8yr old son but he is not 1881 or 1891 census in that case my mums great grandfather was also a mariner as well as her great great grandfather but we still dont know what happened to her grandfather WH Oram jnr.

I am out of my comfort zone when it comes to emigration or immigration records
or census from abroad so cant help you
but grangers has given some brill help there!

I have no idea where to go next other than look at census but if australia ones dont exist
wonder if he went there

Theres also find my past that has passenger lists, it does cost for viewing it mind. Doing a random search, using William including variants, birth year 1879+ - 2 years between 1890 and 1960. Including unstated first name and birth you get 51 hits!

found the above on Ellis Island passenger record - Age at arrival would be 28 (could be an error not likely to be a Widower at
18) and Last place of residence should read Thornaby which is in Teeside (not far from Newcastle). Am going to library on Saturday to see if I can find anything on him on Ancestry.com - if anyone has any tips for me please let me know as I have not used that site.

also found these - could be the WH Oram Senior and Junior, but DOB is incorrect for Junior.

This looks like to 2 that went in 1907.

The original manifest has William as Single not as widow and as James son. James is down as Widow. 1901 census has them,
17, Thornaby Place, Thornaby
James Oram, head, wid, 53, Matrass(?) Maker, Wiltshire, Trowbridge
John, son, 20, Labourer, Thornaby
George, son, 13, Thornaby
William, son, 10, Thornaby
Rose, daur, 18, Thornaby


The 1910 census shows that they were living with John Oram, they are down as Father and brother and has the date 1907 as year of immigration. I dont think it can be your William.

dont think so Jimmy we have this topic running in Gen discussion and just had a look they say

"William Henry Oram b 1879 in Tynemouth Northumberland ...certainly northumberland.
I think he may have left between 1905 - 1907/8"

I have found a William Oram, born in England about 1875, year of immigration 1891.

Wife and family, in Illinios. Could he be the one.
