ARC,,,Caroline Manger correct father

Post by Frodo »

Looking at the Manger information I have Caroline Manger 's birth is registered in the October - December quarter of 1874 (1875 is given as an approximation on BCC). David and Mary Ann got married on 15th March 1874. The death registration for Edward that Ancestry has found is for April -June quarter, I am wondering if the death might have been in March or earlier and David married Mary Ann almost straight away to help her out because she was pregnant. All the family information that has been passed down definitely has Caroline 's parents as Edward and Mary. Is there any more information that could confirm this?

Mary Ann was Mary Ann(e) Peplow before she married Edward Smith, I'm not sure how this relates to Caroline being named Caroline Peploe Manger with no mention of the surname Smith.

The 1939 Register is definitely the correct family. Th family stayed in and around Beaumont Road where Nathan Taylor built his houses.
Annie Ruston at 22 is Caroline's daughter/Dorothy's sister.

Is there anything that can help verify the year Edward Smith died? Myself and my cousin find it difficult to believe that David married Mary because he had made her pregnant which would have been the case looking at Caroline's date of birth and the date of the marriage. Some on Ancestry use 1874, others use 1871.
Edward was a coal miner according to the Census, perhaps he had an accident?

If you look in the Manger section of the Gallery there is a photo which we think was taken in 1926/7 before Albert Taylor left for America and Joseph moved to Blackpool. It shows the four Manger sisters - Lucretia, Hannah, Martha and Rachel. As she lived nearby if Caroline was a Manger rather than a Smith/Manger I would have thought she might also have been on the photo.

If I sent for Caroline's Certificate would they have used David Manger regardless because Mary and David were married at that point or would they have had to use Edward's name if he was the father? Obviously if Edward died 1871 David must be the father unless there was a third person. My father talked about his Aunt Rachel and Aunt Hannah but not about Caroline. Rachel and Hannah both used to write to him and sent wedding gifts.

I maybe wrong but would think when registering the birth the registrar would only put what was told.

Personally because Caroline was registered as Manger I would get the death cert for Edward.

I don't have access to this record on Find My Past.

It does sound like in might be more useful than information about Edward might be more useful than information about Caroline.
