But without that marriage for John Thompson how do we know who is father is?

Could be another John Thompson.

I agree in the case of the John Thompson who married Rosannah Jones (although the evidence seems to fit). In the case of 'my' John Thompson (the one not married to my great grandmother, it is clear. My uncle knew the names of his grandparents, and, of course, knew all of his surviving aunts, uncles and cousins, including the Piggots. I even met some of his Thompson cousins , who confirmed the details. I even have a photo of Lee Thompson (b 1845). After that it was simple to corroborate from parish registers, census, burials etc (Lee Thompson & Emma nee Vaughan are buried in Dudley cemetery, about 200 yards from my house, and the same distance from where my uncle lived all his life.

Well spotted Jan! I can't explain why I had her as Meakin- my 40 odd year old notes are filed away somewhere!

Looking at Mary, surprisingly there is only one bapt at Tipton for a Mary King in this period, 18 July 1808, d of John King & Ann (same couple had a daughter Amelia bapt 27 Dec 1818, Tipton - note significance of name, 27 Dec 1818.

There are other children for John & Ann.

John King & Ann Lewis m 26 Aug 1797, Wolverhampton.

Death registered March Quarter, Dudley, William Piggott, aged 34.

There was another William registered 1865 in Dudley, but he was aged nine ( checked both on GRO site)
