John James of Cakemore about 1821 or 1822 to after 1891 cens

Post by cakemore »

John James of Cakemore about 1821 or 1822 to after 1891 census

This particular John James has an incomplete history on BCC, but bits and pieces are there.
Here is a bit more:

His grand parents are Charlotte and Joseph Westwood.

Charlotte Adams married Joseph Westwood 3 June 1793, Clent.
Their children are christened in Rowley Regis:

James 14 Sep 1794
Thomas 31 Jan 1796
Ann 7 Apr 1798
Decimus 23 Mar 1800
Joseph 4 Nov 1804
Edward 8 Mar 1807

All the children are named in Joseph Westwood’s will.
He also names John James as his grandson.

They lived at Holt, Cakemore, just by Penncricket Lane.

Joseph Westwood died in 1847, buried 29 April 1847 Rowley Regis aged 78. Charlotte Westwood was buried 24 December 1854 age 79 Rowley Regis. Joseph’s will is in a collection of solicitors documents in Dudley Archives Ref DSCAM/3/455. Probate 23 September 1847, execs son James Westwood and Grandson John James.

Ann Westwood married Horatio James 24 April 1824, Birmingham St Martins.
Horatio James is named as John James father when he marries Sophia Baker in 1843. Also John and Sophia are full age.

John James appears in the census as follows:

1841 with the Westwoods (Shropshire/Hales Owen/Halesowen/District 12/page 3 of 9) age 20
1851 with Charlotte Westwood and his children (Worcestershire/Cakemore/District 5/page 17 of 26) age 30, widower
1861 Darby Hand (Worcestershire/Dudley/District 44/ page 23 and 24 of 31) age 39 with new wife Louisa
1871 Netherton, 38 Withymoor Road (Worcestershire/Dudley/District 44/page 21 of 31) age 49
1881 25 Legge Street (Warwickshire/Birmingham/St Geoarge/District 61 and 62/page 29 of 59) age 59
1891 36 Legge Street (Warwickshire/Birmingham/St George/District 53/page34 of 40 age 71

The move to Birmingham makes sense because the E James gun factory is in Legge Street. Enos James was the grandson of Horatio.

John James married Sophia Baker 6 June 1843, fathers are Horatio James and Joseph Baker. wits are Sophia’s sister Mary and Isaac Hadley
Sophia died 1851 and is buried Rowley Regis, 26 Feb 1851.

John and Sophia’s children are:
Ambrose age 9 in 1851 with John James in 1851
Mary Ann age 2 in 1851 age 13 in 1861 with John James in 1851
Ellen (Hellen) with her grandmother Ann James in 1851; Horatio died
Sophia with her mother’s family (Fletcher and Hadley) in Long Lane in 1851 but as a niece Sophia Westwood age 4 months

John James married Louisa Guest, widow of Daniel Guest, daughter of Charles and Margaret Hill.
Louisa has two sons Henry Guest and John Guest.

John and Louisa have children:
Margaret Ann born 15 Jan 1853 bap 29 Oct 1854 Dudley St Thomas
Daniel born 26 Aug 1855 bap 29 Oct 1854 Dudley St Thomas
Sarah born 8 Jul 1858 bap 18 Mar 1860 Dudley St Thomas

the children’s marriages (probably):

Ambrose to Hannah Troman, father Noah Troman. 1 Jun 1863 Dudley St Edmunds
Mary Ann to ? Chandler
Ellen to Joseph Hollies, son of Joseph Hollies. 14 Feb 1869 Dudley
Sophia to Thomas Westwood.
Margaret Ann to Thomas Cornwell, recorded as Cornwall. 30 Jul 1871 Dudley
Daniel??
Sarah to John Smith, son of John Smith. 24 May 1874 Dudley

There is a problem:
John James is a fairly common name and there is definitely another one of similar age in the Dudley area:
John James 1820 bap Dudley St Thomas
John James marries Ann Perkins, 20 October 1842 Dudley St Thomas
Ambrose James, born 1842

Because Ambrose James, son of John and Sophia is born before they are married he is probably one of the births recorded as Male baby Baker.
I can’t find any record of John James, son of Horatio and Ann Westwood being born, probably because he was born before they were married.

I can’t find any record of death that is certain for either John James or Louisa Hill Guest James
But, maybe I have not looked in the right places.

Yes, that is the correct John James.
I have not found his bapt.

His marriage to Louisa is in her married name of Guest.
It agrees with BCC note.
Here is the WMBMD reference.

Sorry that one is not very clear. I started with a screen shot and it was too big.
It won't let me send a pdf.
