Spent a hour or so this morning trawling through the Parish Records for St John the Baptist, Halesowen for years 1782 to 1785 inclusive. No sign of any Nancy Hazard, or anything else like Nancy Hazlewood, or any other f Hazlewood !!!

So it looks to me like either ......

1) Nancy Mills was born a Hazlewood, but was baptised in some non-conformist church. Given the inclination of William and Hannah Hazlewood, and the fact that Oldbury was a strong non-conformist area, this seems quite possible.

2) Nancy has a previous marriage before the one with Thomas Mills.
Assuming the age for Nancy Mills - 85, on the 1851 census is correct, and that Hannah Mills - b 31/03/1812 is the eldest child of Nancy and Thomas Mills, then Nancy would be age 29 at Hannah Mills's birth. This seems a little on the old side? So, plausible that Nancy could have had a previous marriage when she was in her early 20's.

Hence a few of possibilities .......

2a) Nancy Hazlewood, chr 27/10/1782 at Oldswinford, daughter of George and Mary Hazlewood (but not checked the original Parish Record yet)
Who then married 31/05/1803 (at age 21) at Oldswinford, James Moor (but not checked the original Parish Record yet)
James Moor then maybe died, and Nancy Moor subsequently married Thomas Mills (presumably before 1812). In which case it looks like the Nancy Mills on the 1841 census is not the daughter, but rather a niece (by marriage) of Hannah Hazlewood.
Does anyone know of a record of any such second marriage?

2b) Nancy Unknown, born c 1783, married Unknown Hazlewood sometime about 1800. Unknown Hazlewood then maybe died, and Nancy Hazlewood subsequently married Thomas Mills (presumably before 1812). In which case Nancy Mills and Hannah Hazlewood are related by marriage though some Unknown Hazlewood, presumably related to William Hazlewood. I've done lots of searching for a marriage between Nancy Hazlewood and Thomas Mills and found nothing so far, but does anyone know of a record of any such second marriage?

2c) Nancy Unknown, born c 1783, married Unknown Unknown sometime about 1800. Unknown Unknown then maybe died, and Nancy Unknown subsequently married Thomas Mills (presumably before 1812). Seems there are rather too many Unknown's here to make much progress !!!!

2d) I'll repeat again, maybe Nancy was just a nickname or family name. The reason I keep coming back this possibility is I that can't find a death certificate for a Nancy Mills in the years following 1851 (when she was 68).

PS While I'm typing .........

Special thank you from me to rockyfowler for the information on the marriage of Timothy Hazlewood and Ellen Catherine Pratt. I'd traced Ellen back through the Census's to 1851, and knew a bit about her parents as they are all living together in 1881 census in Tat Bank Road, Oldbury. However, I didn't know that her middle name was Catherine, and hadn't yet located her marriage details.

Further to the previous post (which I forgot to add) ....

On the 1851 Census Nancy Mills's place of birth was recorded as Langley, which would still fit in with possibility (1).

However, doesn't seems to fit in with possibility (2a) ??? Why would she be Christened in Oldswinford if she was born in Oldbury?
