Post by Linden »

Do you have this persons image in your family album Do you know of him ? "William Smith " maybe " William Henry Smith" of Warwickshire Smith was a merchant seaman - ships cook. I have several records Mr Smith gives his birth date as 7th Oct 1877 BRICK WALL" the GPO in UK have advised me to stop searching as no such person is born on 7th Oct in the entire county of Warwickshire in searches 1873-1884 The way forward is face recognition, calling on all families connected to surname Smith in Warwickshire is he in your photo album ? His father is believed to have been William Henry Smith, Engineer
mother not known'

I assume this is one of the records you refer to from the Merchant Seaman lists.

Last name:SMITH

First names:William

Age:

Day of birth:7

Month of birth:October

Year of birth:1877

Place of birth:Lowther Warick Eng

County/country of birth:

Card type:CR10

Discharge number:962138

Identity certificate no.:824338

Series:BT350

Date range:1918-1921

There is a Lowther Street in Warwickshire but the only town or parish with that name is in Cumbria.

Assuming he was born near Lowther Street in Warwickshire that would make his parish Coventry.

Looking at the parish register of St John The Baptist in Coventry there is a William Smith born 12th October 1877 baptised on the 14th December 1887.

Parents are William and Elizabeth and their address was 8H 11C West Orchard.

William Snr's occupation is Labourer.

10 years before Baptism? Sounds like this one was adopted.
