1851 Back of Spring Hill Halesowen
Thomas Coley HD M 40 Button Presser born Illey Worcs
Mary Ann Wife 36 Button Cliper Halesowen
Eli Son 12 Scholar Halesowen

This looks like him then must have progressed to a Button Manufacturer.

Will add the Marriages for a look up. Should be easy to find Thomas's family as not many Coley's in Illey.

Thanks Jimmy the Witnesses could be very helpful.

If this is the uncle of Richard Coley Smith then father is a Joseph not a John
so that bapt for a Thomas and a Mary father John is not the correct family
but not sure that farmer Joseph is the correct one for this Thomas that family already have a mary aged 15 on 1841
I think Thomas button maker belongs to another Joseph
maybe one that has a Mary b 1800 too

Hi Jan sorry am on my mobile so cannot paste any links. Just wanted to say that Thomas above is definetley the one who becomes Thomas Coley the Button Manufacturer' - how he links to Richard Coley Smith is frankly anyone's guess, all we can do after searching all the available records is make a best guess. I had Halesowen Aunties & Uncles, no relation just good family friends.

From a book I have on Halesowen:-

Thomas Coley who had been an apprentice to Joseph Harris Button Manufacturer Spring Hill, set up his own Button Works in Highfield Lane. Known as 'Thomas Coley & Sons' the Works continued at Highfields until 1885.
