ARC TBC - Mary Coley 1800 - 1837 Halesowen
I have a death cert for Mary Coley died 20/12/1837 age 37 died in childbirth ,in attendance Elizabeth Johnson, death registered 23/12/1837 at Cornbow Halesowen.
I have found a bap at St Johns H/O for Mary Coley 16/4/1800 of John and Mary Coley - is this her?
On same page in parish register burial for Mary Coley 12/4/1800 - is this Mary's mum who poss also died in childbirth?
Can we find a marriage for John Coley married Mary unknown pre 1800?
Mary b 1800 had a brother Thomas
Can we find in 1841 census John Coley widower, Cornbow area possibly?
I am trying to prove that Mary b 1800 is William Smith common law wife, mother of Richard Coley Smith, bap as Richard son of William and Mary Smith 17/5/1838 at Romsley. In 1841census Richard was living in Cornbow with William Smith (father) and Sarah Smith (grandmother)
There seem to be numerous connections between Smith, Coley Bayliss and Crumpton families in the Cornbow

This could work couldnt it
Linell notes this....
Richard was apparently the favourite nephew of Thomas Coley, the owner of a prosperous "˜button manufactory"™ in Love Lane, Hasbury (maybe Thomas was Richard's father??) Thomas Coley is reputed to have advanced the money to start the Nailmaking Business which Richard carried on throughout his adult life.
that would fit with Thomas being brother to Mary Coley
and the middle name of Richard Coley Smith.
is that Thomas Coley the son of John and Mary mentioned above?
Re: Mary Coley 1800 - 1837 Halesowen
Mary was 37 0n death cert.
Elizabeth Johnson was informant present at death her residence was Cornbow. She could be significant, can anyone find her on 1841 census?
I have also the same info about Richard, that he was set up in business by Thomas Coley, a button factory owner of Love Lane. Not sure if that was where he lived or where factory was. Thomas Coley was his uncle. This info comes from a family member who is a geneaolygist who has been transcribing St Johns parish records.
So we have Mary born 1800 with a brother Thomas can we find himI on 1841 census and work back through his marriage?

Elizabeth is aged 45 in 1841 (living next door to Wm and Richard Smith) with Evan Johnson aged 60. Elizabeth is not there in 1851 Evan is a Widower aged 73 Nailer, born Bridgnorth. Wonder if Evan did live with or Marry Elizabeth

As for Mary how do we know she wasn't Married to a Coley, maybe Thomas was a brother in law

I too have searched all the Parish Records for Mary not found anything solid.

Re: Mary Coley 1800 - 1837 Halesowen
I have split thread and put Thomas query on another thread.
I think that Mary Coley looks like sister of Thomas Coley
that bit about being nephew of Thomas
But not sure father is John for her and Thomas
Thomas Coley button manuf is on another thread but father for a poss marriage is a JOseph not a john.
have for moment whilst work in progress connected here

Re: Mary Coley 1800 - 1837 Halesowen
Richard Smith baptised Halesowen 17.5.1838 -
[Baptism notes] Pr looked up by Jan ...Richard Smith son of William and Mary Borough Nailer.
Mary Coley - Burial
24 Dec 1837
St Johns Halesowen Parish Register says she was aged 34
These dates to not add up Richard born about 1838, Mary died 20.12.1837
I think Richard was born before Civil Registration, nothing on Free BMD until 1839, don't think that is him
What name was on Mary's Death Certificate Dumblonde, was it Mary Coley or Mary Smith
I did notice that the name Richard runs through the Smith Tree, Wm Smith's father was Richard Smith, perhaps we have this all wrong and Wm Smith was Richard's father, and Mary was the Coley
She died so Richard kept her name as anyone would do who had lost their Mom at any early age. Just my thoughts
Linell.

Re: Mary Coley 1800 - 1837 Halesowen
Thanks dumblonde so Mary was Smith on Richards baptism Coley on her death cert and burial. How do you know Richard was 5 months when he was baptised, some Census entries place his birth abt 1836. Mary's death in Childbirth may have been another child, who probably wouldn't have survived either? Ok I give up on this, too many 'scenarios!'
