This is interesting to me, as Kate Lewit on the 1901 and 1911 and her brother Leonard on the 1911, are my Great Aunt and Uncle. I have long been puzzled as to who this Bateman family were that took in two of my Great Grandma's illegitimate children and what happened, that by 1914, Kate was living in New John Street, where she died, aged 14 and her birth Mother was present at the death.
According to family oral history, Leonard didn't get on with his Step-father (his Mother finally married William Kite in 1914, after already having a number of children by him, starting from around 1908) so Leonard was sent to a Birmingham Children's home and in 1916 became one of the many Home Children, shipped to Canada.
Did Elizabeth Bateman die? Is that what caused the two children to end up back with their Birth Mother? Kate must have been with Elizabeth Bateman for more than 10 years.
