Lenard Leweit adopted 5 b.Swansey, Glam.

This is interesting to me, as Kate Lewit on the 1901 and 1911 and her brother Leonard on the 1911, are my Great Aunt and Uncle. I have long been puzzled as to who this Bateman family were that took in two of my Great Grandma's illegitimate children and what happened, that by 1914, Kate was living in New John Street, where she died, aged 14 and her birth Mother was present at the death.

According to family oral history, Leonard didn't get on with his Step-father (his Mother finally married William Kite in 1914, after already having a number of children by him, starting from around 1908) so Leonard was sent to a Birmingham Children's home and in 1916 became one of the many Home Children, shipped to Canada.

Did Elizabeth Bateman die? Is that what caused the two children to end up back with their Birth Mother? Kate must have been with Elizabeth Bateman for more than 10 years.

Who was Kates birth mother Lulu?

There is also the name Lewit as a witness to a Bateman marriage. I will try and look for it.

That's really interesting, as Mary wouldn't have been living up in the Black Country for many years, she was born in Swansea and in 1891 moved to North Wales, where her Father died that year.

I can't find Mary on the 1901 Census, obviously there was a father to Kate, born in 1900 and I'm starting to wonder if it may have been one of the Bateman family. This is Mary on BCC. http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/family-tree/bcconnections/184337/4397/Mary-Lewitt-Family

That possible birth on BCC isn't correct, she certainly wasn't born in Wolverhampton. I had someone contact me ages ago via Genes R, or Ancestry, they had made the same mistake and I tried to tell this person she had hitched her tree up to completely the wrong family but she didn't want to know. I only saw the suggested birth on BCC this morning but had to go out and am only back in briefly now. Will get her B Cert out later and sort it (I hope)

The reason for the confusion is that Mary is actually of Belgian descent and her birth is registered under the Belgian spelling of Louwet, then morphed to Lewett, followed by the more common spelling (Often in Leicestershire) of Lewit. And this family have been far more trouble than all my others put together.

That's a tricky one! Should we go with the correct Belgian spelling, as that is the origin? Also it's what Mary was registered under. Mary had one surviving brother, who went on to have children, all his line have gone with a mis-spelling on his birth certificate and are known as Lousvet. Mary's surviving children were all Kite, apart from Leonard and he ended up with the Lewit spelling. He has around 100 descendants in America.

So should it be original name, or one most used? Personally I would prefer Louwet, which prevents the family getting mixed up with all the Leics Lewits.

Yes, they did fib and when they married, it seems to me that they did it in secret as the were married in Stourbridge Registry Office.

we can go with both Lewitt and Louwet for now as we only have one other Lewitt on at the moment.
If we suddenly get tons of them added I will go for Lewitt and we can put a note on re how an individual is spelt

so change mary if you like to Louwet and I will note on the hompage under variants the one also to check
let me know when you have changed Mary and I will update homepage
