Yes, I would have thought it would say widower, but the image definately says single. It also has a word crossed out and boarder written across the top , unfortunately I can't make out the word that's crossed out.

I believe that Gowker is really Golcar, and that whoever wrote the census wrote what he heard, apparantly locals pronounce Golcar as 'Gowker'. Im still unsure as to why he is listed as being born in Yorkshire on one census and Manchester, Lancashire on the others.

It could be that others on the page were born there and the enumerator just put that down for his birth place as well??????
the 1911 census form was filled in by Herbert, and it just says Manchester for Williams birth place.

That sounds right to me too - he obviously did come from Manchester. I think I will have to try to get William and Elizabeths 1868 marriage certificate to be absolutely sure.

No its not completed, I am in Canada at the moment, and cant really follow any more up until I go back to the UK, which hopefully will be before too long.
