Baker/Dibble

Post by Maggi »

Hi everyone. I`ve just joined in the hope that some-one may have a hammer large enough to knock down the brick wall I`ve hit!
My paternal great-grandparents were Charlotte Dibble, born in Dorking 3rd Jan 1857 & died in Canada 23rd Feb 1943 & William Baker born as far as I can find out 9th Nov 1852 ( all I have for place of birth is "England") died Canada 22nd Jan 1933. They married at The Parish Church, Dorking on 20th Dec 1882.All I can find going back on William is that his father was called John(deceased), no mention of his mother! Charlotte`s parents were Charles Dibble, born abt 1831 in Dorking & Caroline Tanner, born abt1833 in Abinger, Surrey. They were married abt Jun 1855 in Dorking. I`m mainly concerned with trying to get more info on William, ie: place of birth & parents details. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I`m fairly new to this! Best wishes, Maggi.

What sort of Occupation appears for William on his Marriage certificate? -- that might give a lead -- were any of his famiily the witnesses?

On the marriage certificate William`s occupation is listed as coal miner, at least that`s what I make it to be.
His place of residence is Dorking, no address! I`ve tried the census records, but couldn`t find any trace of William
or John. I`ll try looking up the info you have kindly given - many thanks, Maggi.

Forgot witness details in last post! They were Emily Jane Creed & Frank Farr. I don`t know if they were related or not,but it will be worth checking.
Thankyou for all info given, I will investigate them further.

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

They must have gone to Canada sometime between their marriage on Dec 20th 1882 & the birth of their eldest
child Alice (my grandmother)in Wellington BC in 1885. Unfortunately I haven`t been able to find out a date.

Hi Maggi
William Henry Baker son of John Joseph Baker in Bermondsey would not seem to be the correct William.
In 1882, John Joseph Baker was still alive. He died in 1894. It is also unlikely that John Joseph's son would be a coal miner. JJ himself was a ropemaker and had a ropeyard in Bermondsey. Most of his sons followed him into the trade, although a couple went into sailmaking. The occupation for William Henry Baker on the 1871 census is 'mariner'.
Best wishes,
Paulette
