Warning - Are you Easily Conned?

Post by grangers14 »

My Mum has just signed up for broadband from BT and got a new lap top. Last week she was contacted by phone saying she had problems with her anti virus. She couldn"™t understand the person and as she was going out stopped the call.
The other day she had another call and texted me to go over because the man from BT was on the phone about her computer. She was all confused what was going on, told me a little and I spoke to him.
He went through a few things with me and told me what to do then he took control over the computer to "fix" the problems. After I had said my Mum had anti virus through BT he said this was something it wasn"™t covering and she had to pay £139 for 3 years cover.
So the company was paid...

Oh how stupid. The man wasn"™t from BT at all and the company is just a scam!
www.fullpcsupport.com
Looks an ok site, gave numbers for contacts etc.
But how wrong can you be.
Today I have just been through her computer trying to get rid of what they put on there and Mums been to the bank to try and stop payment and spoke to the Fraud people.
It cant be classed as fraud because Mum agreed to it!

Just hope she gets her money back...

So be warned if you get any calls like that!

I hope your Mum gets it sorted out. I know what I'd do to these con men if I caught them, and it wouldn't be pleasant (and not suitable for this forum!).
It does make me wonder how they got hold of your mum's details, or if it was a lucky hit.

My parents were contacted by someone claiming to be from their phone company (not BT), and asked for their customer number - my Dad had the presence of mind to realise that if they didn't know it then they probably weren't legitimate. The man on the other end hung up when my Dad challeged him, and when they did a number check the phone number was witheld. My Dad then phoned his phone company and was told there were con men ringing round.

It is a con if the software she paid for does not perform the functions promoted to her.

If you want a stop put on a cheque or credit card transaction it is not up to the bank to decide if the request is valid.

That is to be sorted out between the account owner and those "owed".

The bank has a duty of care to the account holder.

That's terrible Jo, your poor Mom :o I don't connect with anyone who:-

Knocks at my door
Stops me in the street or the supermarket
Emails me
Phones me

If I need anything, I always make the contact, then you know you are dealing with a reputable company.

Hope she manages to get her money back.

Linell.

That is terrible. But if they are trying to present themselves as a reputable company then they should have some sort of money back guarentee? Presumably there was some sort of contract involved and you didn't just send the money from paypal to a complete stranger?

We've been bombarded with this type of call recently too, sometimes several times a day! They are always foreign voices, telling you there's a problem with your computer. Our local Radio ( Shropshire) ran an article on them recently, and advised reporting them to Trading Standards, although I don't expect they could do anything if the callers are abroad. They did say, however that Microsoft, and the main computer companies NEVER contact you by phone like that. Why would they? They have your e-mail!
By the way, my 83 year old Mother keeps getting these calls too! Never had a computer in her life, and never likely to!
The last one I had, just over a week ago, before they spoke(there's always a delay, so you know it's another one of those calls!) I said" This call is being recorded for security purposes and will be traced. Do you wish to proceed caller?" Haven't had one since!!!

I'm the same as Linell. Love your reply Margarett.

We had a call not so long ago supposedly from Sky. He said he was calling from Sky and did we receive Sky? My reply was "if you're from Sky you should know if we have it or not" and put the phone down.
