Just coming "off thread" a bit - I went to my grandson's school the other night to see him play in their summer music festival. These kids were aged 11 - 16 and it was great to see how much talent was there and how the kids really enjoyed the music and the instruments. Two of the children have won a scholarship to the Birmingham Conservatoire. All of them were seriously studying and getting their grades. It was lovely. All my grandkids play an instrument, Elisabeth, 10 years old is playing a piece on the piano in the school production of Oliver next week. Sooooo proud

It is amazing how good the kids are; we have a local lad who has just won a scholarship to the Birmingham Conservatoire who was playing classical guitar as well as some professionals I've heard when he was fifteen. We went to see Moore, Moss and Rutter the other night, not one of them is old enough to drink at the bar and their combined ages added up to less than the fellow who puts on the gigs. but brilliant musicians.

It must be doubly pleasing when they are your own kids.

William (11) plays drums, Harrison (11) plays clarinet and saxaphone, Jonathan (11) plays accoustic guitar and is taking up clarinet in September, Elizabeth (10) plays piano and Jessica (7) plays cornet.

Just hope they all keep it up. I played the violin in the school orchestra but had my kids very young, so there was enough wailing going on in the house.

We had the pleasure of hearing this young lady play recently, when she was presented with her Bursary. I adore the Harp and to see her playing, with no written music, you have to wonder how she can keep all that in her head, I think the instrument had 7 pedals, never mind all those strings. I suspect she is a name that will become well known, have twice won the Young Musician of Herefordshire. Glenda Allaway and as you can see from the photo, she's very pretty too!

You have to admire the skill and devotion in these young people.

Thanks Jimmy for finding that. I love that piece, which I am sure is an old traditional song, some of the words are something about one staying and another one leaving but can't for the life of me think what it is. Can anyone help?
