Cheques
Has anyone been told that cheques are not going to be accepted anymore?

Re: Cheques
Funny you should say that, as I need to pay Green Thumb, who come and treat our lawn every three months and annoyingly, as I wasn't here last time, to pay them in cash, it means I need to send a cheque. Can't find the blessed cheque book anywhere, due to current building works in the house. So just this minute had to phone Bank to order a new one.
I did see a Headline on either Yahoo, or AOL, in the last day or two, which said that cheques were not going to be scrapped but I didn't stop to read the article, so I don't know any more than that.

Re: Cheques
Some places have stopped taking them because they have stopped the Cheque Guarantee cards, Post Office I heard for one.

Re: Cheques
I mostly use mine for sending the Grandchildren birthday and Christmas presents. They all live away from here, and so often can't see them on the day. I wouldn't dream of sending cash in the post, due to the thieving beggars, that (so I hear) have some way of scanning for the little metal strips in bank notes, and remove them. At least, if they aren't scrapping them I can still use them for that but hard to use anywhere else these days.

Re: Cheques
The banks want to get rid of cheques because it costs them so much to handle them but they were told they couldn't do that without replacing them with something similar for those who don't have internet access, can't actually get to the bank or are too young to be allowed a credit/debit card. They've been unable to come up with anything so they've changed their minds about scrapping them. It made me laugh, they stopped accepting cheques from supermarkets, petrol stations etc. (well, not actually stopped but put the charges up so as to make it economically unviable) and then, when the retailers stopped accepting cheques, claimed that no one wanted to use cheques anymore.
They also decided to stop guaranteeing cheques up to a certain amount, which is why your cheque guarantee card doesn't guarantee anything anymore. They've also put up the charges for handling credit card payments which is why so many places now charge a premium to use a credit card. Never mind, just as long as they get their bonuses what does it matter?

They really are the most dreadful blood suckers and have been for a long while, it can surely be no coincidence the Bankers rhymes with...........oh, what was that word?

Re: Cheques
The only time I use cheques is when I send to a local register office for a certificate. I've used a debit card for years, or cash if I'm buying stuff in the market.
There's no place like home ......

Re: Cheques
I pay the lad who cuts the grass by cheque, he prefers it as it helps him keep his books in order. Same for the man who delivers the logs, and the sweep. MrsSRD uses cheques to pay for the rental of the church hall she uses for her art group. The Credit Union I'm a member of uses cheques with covering, counter-signed letters, to dish out the loans to those who don't have a usable bank account, cash would be much too risky (and expensive to insure) for the local volunteers to lug around and the cost of sending out someone from head office would be far too great.
