ARC tbc............Narraway Family - Dudley - 1911

This is just for fun really but I was talking to our local Butcher, in the pub last night. He's of a similar age to me and has a fairly unusual surname. He said that although there are a lot of them around Worcester now, he did have family that came from The Black Country. He didn't actually specify where, and I didn't ask him to clarify, as the way he was talking, he made it sound like it was somewhere a long way off, that you needed a passport for!

I found his birth easily and from that had his Mother's Maiden name (Tandy). That enabled me to find their marriage, in Worcester in 1946. The father's name was James William Narraway. That gave me his birth in 1928, with the Mother's maiden name of Fowler.

That led me to this marriage for my friend's Grandparents
Name: NARRAWAY, James W H
Registration District: Help Worcester
County: Worcestershire
Year of Registration: 1925
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Fowler
Volume No: 6C
Page No: 285

Name: FOWLER, Dorothy F R
Registration District: Worcester
County: Worcestershire
Year of Registration: 1925
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Narraway
Volume No: 6C
Page No: 285

Looking on the 1911 Census, there isn't a likely candidate in Worcester but there is this family in Charlotte Street, Dudley. (which ties in with his belief of coming from the Black Country)
NARRAWAY, William Head Married M 39 1872 General Labourer Worcester Dudley VIEW
NARRAWAY, Maggie Wife Married
16 years F 35 1876
NARRAWAY, Moses Son M 8 1903
NARRAWAY, William Son M 6 1905
NARRAWAY, Lilly Daughter F 13 1898 School
NARRAWAY, Edith Daughter F 10 1901 School
NARRAWAY, Caroline Daughter F 0 (5 MONTHS) 1911
NARRAWAY, Jane Daughter F 3 1908

Looking for Dudley births, there is only one in the right time scale
Name: NARRAWAY, James William
Registration District: Dudley
County: Staffordshire
Year of Registration: 1906
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
So young William has the name James, although, obviously not the one he went by at home.

So then, looking at his parents, this has to be their marriage, as it ties in with the info on the 1911, when they say married for 16 years.

Name: NARRAWAY, William Henry
Registration District: Help Dudley
County: Staffordshire
Year of Registration: 1894
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
William Henry Narraway married one of the following people :-

SOUTHALL, Susannah

GRIFFIN, Margaret This'll be Maggie then.

This was all going so nicely then :o BRICK WALL
I'm not interested in following the lines of the females, as I said, this was only started as a bit of fun and something to tell him next time I see him in the pub. So I really just want to stick to the Narraways but I just can't find them on any earlier Census. Anyone have any ideas as to where I'm going wrong? :?

Thanks NL, so with the use of names, in the next generation, that does seem to confirm I have the right family in 1911 but where are they in 1901 and for that matter, where is he in 91 and 81, when you would hope he'd be living with parents. Doesn't help when they have one name and then use the second name.

Golly! They didn't like to leave a clear trail, did they?

So it looks as if Dona (Sidona) ended up in Wick, which is the most beautiful hamlet, just outside Pershore. Hard to imagine such poor sounding people (Navvy & Nailmaker) could have been living there, you'd have to have a very healthy bank balance to live there today.

Thanks for all your help, that's great and they connect to BCC!! Unless I missed it, they are still being elusive on the 1901, William and Margaret that is.

If there are any Rugby fans, you may have heard of my friend's son, he plays for England, although having treatment for a back complaint right now. http://www.rfu.com/SquadsAndPlayers/Eng ... raway.aspx
