I found his birth easily and from that had his Mother's Maiden name (Tandy). That enabled me to find their marriage, in Worcester in 1946. The father's name was James William Narraway. That gave me his birth in 1928, with the Mother's maiden name of Fowler.
That led me to this marriage for my friend's Grandparents

Looking on the 1911 Census, there isn't a likely candidate in Worcester but there is this family in Charlotte Street, Dudley. (which ties in with his belief of coming from the Black Country)
NARRAWAY, William Head Married M 39 1872 General Labourer Worcester Dudley VIEW
NARRAWAY, Maggie Wife Married

Looking for Dudley births, there is only one in the right time scale
Name: NARRAWAY, James William
Registration District: Dudley
County: Staffordshire
Year of Registration: 1906
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
So young William has the name James, although, obviously not the one he went by at home.
So then, looking at his parents, this has to be their marriage, as it ties in with the info on the 1911, when they say married for 16 years.
Name: NARRAWAY, William Henry
Registration District: Help Dudley
County: Staffordshire
Year of Registration: 1894
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
William Henry Narraway married one of the following people :-
SOUTHALL, Susannah
GRIFFIN, Margaret This'll be Maggie then.
This was all going so nicely then

I'm not interested in following the lines of the females, as I said, this was only started as a bit of fun and something to tell him next time I see him in the pub. So I really just want to stick to the Narraways but I just can't find them on any earlier Census. Anyone have any ideas as to where I'm going wrong?
