Wolvie has gone to a curry house tonight :roll:
luckily with a pharmacist friend :lol:

he always suffers after a curry!
I make him sleep in the shed!!!

anyway I had to cook the Spag Bol
been awhile since I have as he always does it

now I have to say this was supposed to be son going to Uni
learning to cook

Unlike others on here he does his own ironing, cleans his room
and dyes his own hair extensions :roll:

but I thought it would be good for him to learn
but
he was in the middle of a desperate second life game................wot a load of ................... :roll:
and I was hungry so it fell to me to deliver the goods

and the verdict was................better than Wolvies

so my point is.............and there is one honest

what are the ulitmate recipes

can we sort of get together
over a conflab
and come up with the

Ulitmate Spag bol
Chilli
Curry

sort of herman bloomin him again style

Hmm, never really did spag bol; when I was a pauper I'd fill up with spaghetti dressed with a sauce made up with some minced garlic softened in butter and a couple of dessertspoons of chopped fresh parsley. One could add some chopped bacon to soften in the butter and/or some flakes of parmesan. Parmesan is better bought in a lump from the deli counter and grated or flaked as needed; it keeps well in the fridge wrapped in some clingfilm and a lump of 500g or so makes a grand present to a pauper. Actually any number of things; chilli flakes, prawns, diced courgette etc. can be added for variety.
Curry is far too wide a subject to suggest a single recipe; one of my favourites from a vegetarian Gujerati family was a simple, spiced, fried white cabbage curry with a stack of buttered chapattis but the chapattis take a lot of time to do.
Delia does quite a good Chilli in her original cookery course books (the single volume of which makes another good pressie for a student) but we rather like the Cajun version of Red Beans and Rice from Cajun & Creole Cooking by Carol Bowen which we adapt as follows:

Red Beans and Rice

175 g streaky bacon, rinded and chopped
1 large onion, chopped
2 celery sticks, chopped
1 green (bell) pepper, cored and chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 red chilli finely chopped
1/2 tsp ground bay leaves (or sassafras leaf powder)
dash of Tabasco (Smoked Chipotle flavour is best)
400g tinned tomatoes
4 tsp chopped parsley
400g tin of red kidney beans, undrained
salt and pepper
boiled rice, to serve

Place the bacon in a pan over a gentle heat and cook until the fat starts to run.

Add the onion, celery, pepper, garlic and chilli and mix well. Cover and cook gently for about 15 minutes or until well softened.

Add the bay leaves, Tabasco, tinned tomatoes, parsley, kidney beans and salt and pepper to taste. Stir well to mix.

Cover the pan and simmer for a further 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve hot with a couple of spoonfuls of freshly cooked rice on top for a main meal, or as an accompaniment to a meat dish.

You can leave out the bacon for a vegetarian chilli or add some French style garlic sausage (The Poles do a particularly good fennel seed flavoured sausage which works really well) cut into chunks about 10 minutes before serving.

SRD.....After that soddin mouthful recipe, be to tired to eat....also you need a mortgage to buy the ingredients you certainly don't live in a Third World country.

My Spag Bol is a chuck it all in and see what happens!
Staple ingreadients include tinned toms, minced beef, garlic, onion, basil, oregano - the rest depends on what's in the fridge! Oh and I either put worcester sauce or HP in it too!
And the Spag bit is usually wholemeal.

Tend to do Carbonara more often though - dead quick and easy.

Does he like tuna NL?
Quick and cheap tuna spag and my son made it all the time at uni :lol:

kettle on, boil the water, ready for spag or any pasta
peel an onion and chop
drain the oil from the tuna in a frying pan and turn it on

water would likely be boiled by then, put in a pan and add spag or pasta

add the chopped onion to hot oil, then
garlic
tuna
tinned toms
squeeze of tom puree and salad cream, so it goes pinky
oregano and/ or majoram
salt pepper to taste
I add some curry powder too
heat through
pasta should be ready

All done!

Another quick, easy and cheap recipe, and good to put in front of a vegetarian:
Soften half an onion in a couple of tablespoons of oil, add a finely chopped garlic clove (or half a teaspoon of the bottled minced garlic or half an inch from a tube of garlic puree) and a pinch of chilli flakes (if liked) and stir for around thirty seconds, add a tin of chickpeas and heat through. If serving as a salad allow to cool to room temperature before dressing with plenty of coarsely chopped parsley (flat leafed if you can get it) and fresh oregano leaf and the grated rind and juice from half a lemon. Or you can stir in the dressing ingredients when it's hot and eat straight away, but the green leaf will wilt and look a bit icky. If the herb flavours are too strong for you you can use chopped salad spinach. All very Greek.
