Tracing Jacksons in 18th century Yorkshire (York and Hull)

Post by usignuolo »

Previously members have been very helpful and I am wondering if you can help again. My brother and I have been researching our family tree and thought we had reached a dead end with the discovery of our great great etc grandfather Thomas Jackson who lived in Holland in the early 19th century. However a researcher in Holland has traced more information and the trail has started up again and leads back to England and to Yorkshire.

This is what we have found out. Thomas Jackson was a glass maker and an art dealer in Amsterdam. He was born in York in 1791/2. He married Hannah Leonard of Hull (b 1791) in Amsterdam in 1818.He was as successful man in Holland. He acted as a frame maker and dealer for a leading English painter there, Charles Howard Hodges (1764-1736) who was settled in Holland/Netherlands. The two men were from different parts of the UK and we cannot find any evidence that Hodges lived in Yorkshire before moving to Holland. We have no idea when Thos moved to Holland or how Hannah came to be there.

Hannah died in childbirth in 1734 and Thomas died in 1735 leaving behind them a young family. One, Thomas Junior, became a sailor. Another, Alexander, eventually moved to London and became a tailor and he is our ancestor. . There is no indication that Thomas left any money so someone must have looked after the childre for several years. We think Thomas had a brother Richard who also moved to Holland and maybe took care of them. There were also other children including a girl Mary Jane who stayed in Holland and married there. Thomas Jr emigrated to the USA after several years at sea.

We now want to try and trace this Yorkshire branch. We believe that the father of Thomas who was the glass engraver and art dealer in Amsterdam was also an engraver in York. Hannah was from Hull and her maiden name was Leonard. We do not know her family background. Both Thomas and Hannah were born around 1791.
