Help pls on a Tree programme

A neighbour wishes to do some Genealogy.
She is not on the tinternet
She has not done research prev.

She has an old laptop computer.

I suggested getting FAmily Tree maker
and someone else suggested Rootsmagic

is there a free one she can get
and if she isnt online how can she down load it?

She can then put the backbone of her tree on other sites
such as Tribal/Genes/Ancestry to pick up cousins etc

any advice pls

I haven't done it myself but I presume one can download any of the free Tree software to disc and then install it on a different machine. One would need to check compatibility with the operating system; some downloads will 'read' your operating system and install suitable drivers which isn't much good if the destination machine is using a different OS.

Hi NL, Family Search has a free one called PAF. It is easy to down load and easy to use.

I downloaded Legacy 7.5 but it comes with a load of baggage that tries to update the LDS records online so I don't know if it would work without being online. The free version is Ok I suppose, not having anything to compare it with doesn't help, but I'm happier setting out timelines using a spreadsheet.

Your friend could always do some work at home and then book a computer at the library to go online and fill in one of the trees that are available whilst doing some research and coming on here. Round here the librarians (and other library helpers, real librarians are about as rare as hens teeth since the cuts) are pretty helpful.
