Can you post the census info you have, I can't find them in 1841 or 51 (maybe due to strange spellings of surname), and the only William born in Balk is married to an Ann!

Getting back any further than the 1841 Census or Registration which began in 1837 is through parish records.
The mormons have done a grand job of recording parish records on their family search site here : http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/ ... search.asp
Bear in mind though that not all church records are recorded here and some records have been added by members of the public, so really, you will need to prove findings by looking at parish records yourself.
Even if the records you need aren't available here - if you know the church were your ancestors may have been married or baptised, you can look through films yourself at your local LDS Church Centre.

Sue found this information here : http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/ ... search.asp
It's very easy to search - you need to go down the options on the left side of the screen to International Genealogical Index, but as I said before, the IGI is by no means complete.
