ARC TBC - lost children

Post by steverostill »

i have 4 children in the 1881 census living with their father having lost their mum the year before.
dad is now living with another woman as his wife even though there are no records to back up a marriage.
3 months later dad dies.
in a 1891 census none of the kids show up with any combination of search criteria in ancestry, no records of any deaths or marriages and all my ancestry searches of public member trees havent got the information either.
any ideas where they may have gone, ie workhouse, shipped abroad?
tks.

Might their new mom have remarried and they have taken on her husband's name ?

Admittedly it was 40 or so years later but my M-i-L had a not dis-similar experience and she and her siblings ended up in a Quaker orphanage in Leeds. I don't know when these institutions started springing up nor how they were dealt with by the census. But it might be a line of enquiry to follow. Come to think of it I don't know how boarding schools were dealt with - are there census records for places like Eton, Harrow, Winchester etc.?

Have you tried searching using first name+age+birth place? Sometimes that works. Or perhaps birthplace is dodgy if both parents had died.

iaw GRO Henry Gameson married Rebecca Mary Morris in jun 1863 in Kings Norton Birmingham.

on the 1871 census Henry is aged 31 living with two of the children Edward aged 7 and Rebecca aged 4.
the mother is elsewhere in Birmingham ( aged 28).

the GRO records a rebecca Gameson (aged 36 ) dying in Aston , Birmingham.

On the 1881 census Henry aged 40 and indicated as a boarder / publican out of business at 2 Bull Ring Birmingham is living with a Kate Gameson aged 39, Edward aged 16, Rebecca aged 14, Clifford aged 10 and Winifred aged 8.

the GRO records a Henry Gameson death aged 42 in Aston, Birmingham jun 1881.

no signs of Kate or children in any subsequent census or any deaths or marraiges of any family members.

hope you can help.

As you say, there are no Clifford / Winifred births registered in B'ham.

the only births I can find for a Clifford and Winifred A with the same surname are named HIPKINS
in 1871 Clifford is at home with his mother KATE HIPKINS

1871 Pershore St Lower B'ham

HIPKINS, James Head M 27 1844 Pawnbroker Staffordshire
HIPKINS, Kate Wife F 28 1843 Warwickshire
HIPKINS, Clifford Son M 0 1871 Warwickshire
PARLOW, Selina Servant F 17 1854 Staffordshire
STEWART, Sarah Servant F 14 1857 Staffordshire

Perhaps James died and Kate went to live with Henry, and the enumerator put them all down as GAMESON ??????
