Tracing dates of deaths? - COMPLETED

Post by descartes46 »

Hi there, I'm trying to find the last piece of the jigsaw on my ancestor Joseph Baker. I've been successful in tracking his entire life (through censuses and records) but I am having trouble working out how to find a date of death when doing geneology! I've done a search on Ancestry and 100s of Joseph Baker's come up for Worcestershire/staffordshire. Is there a method for narrowing down the possibilities other that trial and error ordering death certs? I've listed details below of the research I've been successful with so far. Please could somebody give me some advice?

Always search the registration district where he last lived.

In this case he lived in Northfield whose registration district is Kings Norton, Worcestershire until 1912 when it changed to Bormingham, Warwickshire.

Between 1903 and 1911 there were three Joseph Baker deaths in Kings Norton.

Civil Registration event: Death
Name: BAKER, Joseph
Registration District: Kings Norton
County: Worcestershire
Year of Registration: 1902
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death: 64
Volume No: 6C
Page No: 294

Civil Registration event: Death
Name: BAKER, Joseph
Registration District: Kings Norton
County: Worcestershire
Year of Registration: 1903
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at death: 73
Volume No: 6C
Page No: 292

Civil Registration event: Death
Name: BAKER, Joseph
Registration District: Kings Norton
County: Worcestershire
Year of Registration: 1911
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Age at death: 81
Volume No: 6C
Page No: 461

Because they are estimated ages at the time of death, anything within two years of his actual age is acceptable.

None of those death match a birth year of 1848 +/- 2 years.

I would then look at the rest of the County but there is nothing matching in Worcestershire.

Since Birmingham is the most likely registration district if he died in Hospital I would then look there.

Only one suitable in Warwickshire is for a Joseph James Baker and that is in Coventry

Civil Registration event: Death
Name: BAKER, Joseph James
Registration District: Coventry
County: Warwickshire
Year of Registration: 1903
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Age at death: 55
Volume No: 6D
Page No: 300

Next I would look at Staffordshire, especially West Bromwich, as that is another large registration district close by his last place of residence.

Looking in the whole of Staffordshire only one suitable death is found.

Civil Registration event: Death
Name: BAKER, Joseph
Registration District: West Bromwich
County: Staffordshire
Year of Registration: 1905
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death: 56
Volume No: 6B
Page No: 496

It is in West Brom and is the only real match out of all three counties.

So I would order that certificate.

Thank you Mark, you have been very helpful. I'm not familiar with the districts and counties yet, but I'm sure I'll understand them eventually! I wouldnt have found this information in a dozen years on my own! haha

Using the local registration details in West Midlands BMD will narrow it down for you - ie, Tipton's registration district is Dudley, but is Tipton on West Midlands BMD - Oldbury has the registration district of West Bromwich, but is Oldbury on West Midlands BMD.

Hope this helps - Maggie

:?: Have you decided he was definitely not on the 1911 census or could he have died after 1911?

I had a look through the 1911 census before searching 1901 to 1911.

There was nothing that matched him, with our without his wife.

I can't see anything different on the death than Mark as found.
