ELWELL FAMILY

Post by nailer2011 »

On BCC I noted a reference to the ELWELL family showed below .
1851 Census High Town Cradley Halesowen Stourbridge Worcs.
William Elwell Head 47 Chain Maker
Ann Elwell wife 46
Sarah Ann Elwell dau 21
George Elwell son 14
Maria Elwell dau 12 Scholar
Daniel Elwell son 10
Martha Elwell dau 6
Phoebe Elwell dau 2Br>
My research suggests that WILLIAM ELWELL was also known as THOMAS. :!: For example, a copy of the birth certificate for daughter, PHOEBE ELWELL, shows she was born in Heath [Town], Wednesfield, Staffordshire on 13 November 1848; her father is confirmed as Thomas Elwell ('Chain Maker') and her mother is confirmed as Ann Elwell, formerly TAYLOR. The 1861 census shows the birthplace of Phoebe as Wolverhampton (District).
The LDS website shows the record of a marriage of a THOMAS ELWELL to ANN TAYLOR in Oldswinford on 25 July 1825 (and of various christenings of their children).
The above daughter, MARIA ELWELL, married DAVID RAYBOULD in St Thomas' Church, Dudley on 22 November 1857. The 'First Notebook of Reverend Thompson' shows Ann living in High Town, Cradley and with her are her daughter, Maria, and her husband, David Raybould, plus her own children Daniel, Martha and Phoebe. A copy of the marriage certificate of MARIA shows her father as Thomas Elwell (dead), Chain Maker; DAVID's father is William Raybould, Nailer. Witnesses to the marriage are Benjamin Guillans/Gwillams and Mary Ann Attwood.
Is this helpful :?: :-)
