In 1851 he is with his first wife Mary Ann Harris
In 1861 he is a boarder with his 2nd wife Mary Ann Whittle nee Hill

In 1861 his first wife is living as wife of Francis Regan with children by Felix
Can someone please look at 1861 census

Mary Ann Regan Wife Daughter Mar 35 Born Darby End
Joseph Beasley Boarder Mar 24 Born Darby End

Did Mary Ann Harris and Felix just seperate he was supposed to be a Widower on his 2nd Marriage
Can anyone see a marriage for Francis Regan and Mary ?

Is Felix the father of Leah and Nancy listed in 1871 they are listed as Whittle but born before 1870

I can find no marriage for Mary Ann Harris and Regan.

It is interesting that Felix calims to be unmarried in the 1861 census.

I would say they just didn't bother going through a divorce.

Even if both parties agreed, it was very difficult and expensive to get a divorce.

I assume the laws in the UK were the same as Australia. If you claimed a divorce occured you had to provide proof at the time of marriage.

Claiming somebody was dead did not require proof.

I would say he took the risk and was a bigamist at his second marriage.

She simply didn't bother getting hitched.

I think its possible that Elizabeth Regan in 1861 is 11 months old?
