I have no details on these Flavells but I have researched Flavell family for Woodgate and Valley organisation and have a lot of info. Flavells seemed to have migrated from Sedgeley to Rowley and then to Northfield ( They were mostly involved in Canals). Northfield in 19th Century was not where we know it today but in Woodgate /Lapal area and one Flavell family were tollkeepers of Lapal Tunnel for a period. I will try and put on bcc when I have time as there is a connection to my Parsons and Brookes line
Found Isaiah and family in 1841 and getting confused over whether Ann/Hannah was two separate daughters or just the one?
1841 Woodside, Dudley Isaiah Flavel 35 labourer y Ann Flavel 30 y Samuel Flavel 12 y Daniel Flavel 9 y Hannah Flavel 5 y James Flavel 6 months y
From this, I am under the assumption that 'my' Hannah (Ann) Flavell is this one, with her parents. As the ages were rounded up? This could fit with her later birth year according to marriage cert and census of circa 1837. Perhaps the christening that Peter has found for a Hannah in 1834 was another daughter who then died?
Having had a quick look on the 1851 census I can't seem to find Isaiah, but there is a Hannah Flavell living in Stourbridge, which is where my Ann Flavell married James Kendrick in 1857, however I think this must be another Hannah, or she is telling some rather big porky pies if it is my one?
1851 Birmingham Road, Stourbridge Hannah Flavell head (widow?!) 20 Brickmaker Stourbridge Fanny Rutter lodger (un) 19 Brickmaker unknown Sarah Flavell daug 6 Stourbridge
I doubt this is the Hannah who is daug of Isaiah, and married James Kendrick, as the age is off, she is claiming to be a widow and with a 6 year old daughter?! Although I am aware she could have had a child while at a very young age herself and perhaps claimed to be a widow if the child were illegitimate?
Much to ponder, I'm prob going down the wrong track as usual but any thoughts or help would be much appreciated. Just thought it was an interesting find.
I think as Hannah is a common pet form of Ann, the vicar probably recorded her as Ann thinking that was her official name. As she signed her mark with an X she probably couldn't read the register and wouldn't have pointed out the mistake.
We have Ann Flavell on connections as born abt 1837, but as she married in 1857 and stated age as 22, this gives us a birth year of 1835. Consistent with Peter's finding of the 1834 HANNAH christening, and also the ages she gives on subsequent census - 5, 24, 34, 44 (until we get to 1891 where she says 59.) She is down as Hannah on each census. Just need to confirm where she was in 1851.
