Don't know if I mean me, my mother in law or the both of us!

My mum in law is an experienced knitter (or maybe that should read nutter!), she fell in love with a knitting pattern the other week, only one problem - it's in english!
So she gets a copy of the pattern, buys the wool and ask's her daughter in law (with very little knitting experience) to translate - it took me four hours!! One complicated pattern too, a harlequin coat, with miters and things I don't understand! Wonder what it'll turn out like , especially as there's one abbreviation I'm not sure of (and mil didn't copy the abbreviations key!), so I'm hoping "M1" means miss one and not something else instead!

Worst of it is, I've just bourght myself a new sewing machine, and now my heads all spaced out, so that'll have to wait until another day!

Snoopy -- did the pattern give the number of stitches at the end of rows -- some do and that would mean you could have a check to see if the number should have increased.

Don't want to worry you, but M1 could well be "make one". Which would be a bit different!

She's decided to order the book (very good idea), so I can check the abreviations for her. It's apparently what you call a "domino" pattern and not for the faint hearted! She's an experienced knitter, so I'm sure it'll be alright, but it's one of those patterns that you really have to concentrate as it changes all the time!
Anyway, there' s no going back - mum in law's bourght the yarn!!!

Not that I recall - it was for the edging, after the coat's been sewn together, and the bit where the M1 came on was at two opposite sides of the front. The pattern says M1, k1, M1. You're supposed to mark two specific points, and from these points mark every 4". Then pick up so many stitches for every 4". Then (if my memory serves) you knit a couple of rows, and just where the two first markers are you do the M1 k1 M1 thing!

I take the point about it should say slip rather than miss.

All I can say is rather her than me!!!!!!

That sounds more likely to be make 1 than miss 1 as an edging would have to get slightly larger as you move away from the main item rather than stay the same size -- I think -- the book with the abbreviations sounds like a good idea!

Definately make one then!

I cheated a bit and used Google to translate, just to save on time. It did an okay job (needed a bit of tweaking), and seemed to know that the stitches were knitting stitches rather than sewing stitches - it even translated K2tog (even I got that one), with the correct danish abbreviation, but it couldn't do SK2P - which I worked out from mum in laws list of translations for the most common knitting terms!

Back to the sewing machine - I've now tried it out! It runs like a dream, good job really as I've 7 pairs of jeans to turn up for my husband (he's dreadful for bulk buying, doesn't realise if you buy them all together, they'll probably wear out all together!!).
Not that I'll be making wedding dresses anytime soon Maggie!

We seem to have had a bit of a spin-off from the Big Fat Gypsy Wedding programme on the telly. We've had a few flower girls asking for 'big sticky out dresses". Wouldn't want to make one of their wedding numbers though - they must weigh a ton.
