ARC TBC - Benjamin Garratt Transported Van Diemans Land

Post by TWG1947 »

Benjamin Garratt was transported to Van Diemans Land in 1846 with a John Billingham, for highway robbery.
He had two previous convictions.
His records give his date of birth as abt 1825, he was married when transported, his occupation was a chain trace maker
and his place of residence as Nr Dudley, most likely Cradley or close.

After his conditional pardon in abt 1855 he married (again) and had the following children.

Thomas, born Longford 1855, died Longford 1855.
Priscilla, born Westbury 1858.
Sarah Ann, born Westbury 1860, died Westbury 1860.
F , born Westbury 1861.
Sarah, born Westbury 1864.
Benjamin, born Westbury 1865.
Thomas, born Westbury 1866, died Westbury 1870.

These childrens names are indictive of various Garratt lines.

Can anyone place him in any family etc?

The children were born in Tasmania after his conditional pardon.

Benjamin Garratt son of Shelah was baptised 12th Jan 1823, he married Eliza Whitehouse, his occupation was furnaceman

On all the convictions for the Benjamin, who was transported, his occupation is a chainmaker.

I did consider Ben son of Shelah as he and Eliza seem to disappear from the census records, maybe he knocked a couple of years from his age to try for a reduced sentence, this was a common practice.

I'v put a little more about Ben on the social history page, along with some minor garratt petty criminals.

And thank you Jimmy for the quote from my site. www.the-curates-line.com

Have you thought he may have married Eliza Whitehouse to lessen his sentence.

Unfortunately, Tasmania doesn't have online BDM indexes. Otherwise the death index might have given us his parents' names.
