I have just received a copy of a will of one of my ancestors -- great excitement -- not a lot of new info but ties together some loose ends.
On the front it states
Effects less than £20 No leaseholds
The contents state that he is bequeathing a total of 7 houses to his children --
My question is --- did 7 houses really come to less than £20 or does effects only cover furniture/cash/personal belongings?
Effects include?

Re: Effects include?
Effects is "Personal Effects" i.e, clothes, jewelry, books, photographs etc.
Depending on the value of the Personal Effect, it may have to be listed as a seperate item rather than just bundled under "effects".
Real Estate is a separate catagory.

Re: Effects include?
I have one will, but will have to get my act together and send off for more of them.
The one I do have sent me off on a very intersting detour to Hartlepool (on the internet of course), to follow the Eades family, that married into my Jeavons family.
I read somewhere that if probate says "effects under..." rather than a precise figure then the various duties hadn't been paid yet, but if the figure was £sd than they had.

Re: Effects include?
Depending on where you are, "effects under xxxx" means that there was no duty/tax to be paid.
The xxx amount changes for location and time.
