I have just found out that my great grandfather served time in Old Elvet Durham Prison when he was 19 (from the 1881 census). My dad confirmed this but we do not know what his crime was and was wondering if any one could help me with this as I have no idea Also his father Charles CAIN and mother Elizabeth CAIN were both born in Ireland (census just says Ireland) - we would like to know which part of Ireland - any ideas

You need to get in touch with Durham Archives and find out what records they hold on any Prisoners. Someone on here may have access to some Irish Web Sites, and will be able to look up Charles Cain for you, fingers crossed there weren't too many of them :!:

Have you tried on Ancestry, there are some John Cains on there.

England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892.
