ARC TBC - James Powell & Mary Ann Jarvis of Rowley Regis

Hi, I need help finding my 10 year brick wall - James Powell, supposedly from Rowley Regis. According to census, marriage and death records, James was born about 1820 in Rowley but I have searched and searched the parish registers of the area and immediately beyond. James Powell married Mary Ann Jarvis at St Thomas' Dudley in 1842. Gave his father as William Powell. NT on 1841 census in the area. Mary and James had Rosannah, Mary Ann, Eliza, Ruth, James and George. Any clues gratefully received.

I wasn't expecting such a response. I have more information.

On 1871 census, James was living with John Powell, listed as his Uncle. On another census (I forget which, sorry) John Powell is living with a William Powell and Sarah Powell as brother. On another census (1871??), William Powell is possible mis-transcribed as Thomas and has a sister, Mary Powell, living with him.

The marriage of John Powell and Mary Grove gives John's father as William Powell. The marriage of William Powell to Sarah Wakeman gives father as William Powell. It is my belief therefore, that James Powell had a brother WIlliam Powell who had at least 3 children- William, John and Mary. What do you think?

There is another discussion thread relating to William Powell and Sarah Wakeman, which, to my knowledge, has not thrown up any light on the origins of this family. William Powell was a widower when he married Sarah Wakeman.

Interestingly, I had missed the Benjamin Powell as witness. Also, there is a Cradley in the West Midlands but it is on the Worcs/Staffs border not Worcs/Hereford border. That Cradley is near Malvern, I think.

That's my James. Curse the common name! however, on the original register it is Benjamin ROUND and Ann Barnsley.

think this is deffo eliza in other topic as mary and ruth are there in 1881 census with them mary age out but think 1881 should be 58 not 50 ?

That is him, living with John Powell. His wife Mary Ann is on census as Jane Powel, living around the corner. she has the 3 youngest kids with her.

and you mentioned getting certifs

do let me know which ones you get will you then we don't repeat the info
and if you don't mind sharing the info by posting it that would be great too.
I have added some to the list but it will be a while before they are done.
so if you do need them quicker and it is only as and when we go etc, then you are
best to send for them from regis office.
Do think about using Dudley and Sandwell they are both excellent registry offices and very
very helpful
