*Arc tbc* --W H Auden, Poet - Black Country Roots

Post by dianel »

While looking at references on James Woodhouse 'The Shoemaker Poet' for another thread, I came across the genealogy of W H Auden.
It seems that his Great Great Grandparents were John Auden and Phoebe Woodhouse who married in Rowley Regis in 1782.

Phoebe is on BCC here:

Wikipedia:
"Wystan Hugh Auden (21 February 1907 - 29 September 1973, ...... who published as W. H. Auden, was an Anglo-American poet, born in England, later an American citizen, regarded by many as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century."

"Auden grew up in Birmingham in a professional middle class family and read English literature at Christ Church, Oxford."

"He was also a prolific writer of prose essays and reviews on literary, political, psychological and religious subjects, and he worked at various times on documentary films, poetic plays and other forms of performance. Throughout his career he was both controversial and influential. After his death, some of his poems, notably "Funeral Blues" ("Stop all the clocks") and "September 1, 1939", became widely known through films, broadcasts and popular media."

"Auden was born in York, England, to George Augustus Auden, a physician, and Constance Rosalie Bicknell Auden, who had trained (but never served) as a missionary nurse. He was the third of three children, all sons; the eldest, George Bernard Auden, became a farmer, while the second, John Bicknell Auden, became a geologist. Auden's grandfathers were both Church of England clergymen; he grew up in an Anglo-Catholic household which followed a "High" form of Anglicanism with doctrine and ritual resembling those of Roman Catholicism. He traced his love of music and language partly to the church services of his childhood. He believed he was of Icelandic descent, and his lifelong fascination with Icelandic legends and Old Norse sagas is visible throughout his work."

"George Augustus Auden (1872 - 1957) was an English physician, professor of public health, school medical officer, and writer on archaeological subjects.

George Augustus Auden was educated at Repton and at Christ's College, Cambridge, taking a first-class degree in natural sciences in 1893.[1] He studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and qualified in medicine in 1896. He then held several medical appointments in London before moving to York where he was physician at York County Hospital for fourteen years. His son W. H. Auden was born at 54 Bootham, York, in 1907, and in 1908 he moved to Birmingham, where he became the first School Medical Officer and Lecturer in Public Health at Birmingham University. Here he gained an international reputation as an innovative researcher and educator. During the First World War he served as a medical officer in the British Army in Egypt, Gallipoli, and France. He retired as School Medical Officer in 1937, but continued at the University and became Professor of Public Health in 1941.

He married Constance Rosalie Bicknell in 1899. They had three sons: Bernard, who became a farmer; the geologist John Bicknell Auden; and the poet W. H. Auden."

Hi Linell,
It was Henrietta Mary Auden who we need to be very grateful to for transcribing the RR pr's. I have a great deal of info on her and the Auden's which was previously posted on another site by a serious researcher. I printed it off (with her permision) as I thought there might be enough to do a booklet or an article on the Audens and the Rowley connection. I also bought a book, "Shrewsbury", written by Henrietta's father, Thomas who was a vicar here in Shropshire, which Henrietta edited. Will look out the old printouts and post some more info later.

Yes, I think Henrietta Mary does link to this same Auden family. Looks like her grandparents are William Auden and Hannah Nicklin. And her mother was Anne Hopkins, sister of Sarah Eliza Hopkins who married John Auden, W. H. Auden's granddad.

Think Thomas, William and John were brothers. Henrietta's father was Thomas, and she was the aunt of the poet.
