Is it Mom or Mum?

Post by Rob »

I mentioned,in fact it was on Facebook, that i would be home in the Black Country for my birthday and it would be the first time in 40years i'd spent it with my Mom.
To my dismay this London friend of mine said, "Mom? You're not American it should be spelt Mum!!!"
What???
Is this true? Have i been watching too many American films? :?

It must be a Black Country thing, all my relatives use Mom. I use both, as I didn't grow up in BC.

I do remember thinking when I was a kid, that it was an americanism as my gran worked in the states for a while. I later realised it wasn't. But we called my gran "Neena" which definately came from the states. My other gran was Nana, so I suppose Neena didn't want to be called "Gran".
(Secretly she was Smorg too! )

Insteresting fact is that in nearly all languages, the name for mother starts by making an "m" sound.

This is the easiest sound to make when a baby is learning to talk.

Mum/Mom, Colour/Color, Disoriented/Disorientated etc.

Purely up to the individual and we are too global to now place everything into national compartments.

You're wrong there my Pommie mate!!
The more global we get the more people's craving for nationalistic things.

I had always thought that 'Mom' was an Americanism. I think most Aussies would say 'Mum'.

When I look back, most of my BC relatives say Mom, even the ones who married in to the family!

It's makes life a little more interesting, the small differences in language - I mean I call a sandwich a butty, but I know my Dad would say it's a "pace" (don't know how it's spelt, but do know it comes from piece), and is my aunt cack handed or caggy handed? All depends on where you come from!!!

As long as these differences continue.

Well, there we are, then. I can happily call my Mum 'Mom' and be true to my roots.
