*Arc tbc*-----Elizabeth Smith b. abt 1818 Windmill End
I know that looking for a Smith is often like looking for a needle in a haystack, especially before the censuses began, but I have a great great grandmother I'd like to trace further, Elizabeth Smith b. about 1817 Windmill End, Netherton, Dudley, Worcs. She married Warwick Plant 1816-1892 in 1836 at All Saints, West Bromwich and founded a dynasty of Black Country fish sellers. This is the family, any suggestion as to Elizabeth Smith's ancestry most welcome!:

Dennis have you looked up that marriage for the witnesses in 1836?
If not do you want me to?
If you do just add it at the bottom of the Look up requests section on the PR's dudley and smethwick look ups!

here is the link with the info Dennis has added to Connections...

Re: Elizabeth Smith b. abt 1818 Windmill End
Your a right about Thomas Plant's wedding in 1861, Mallosa. Many thanks to you and to Dianel for pointing it out. I must have been led astray early on in my research by an entry on the LDS site, pedigree section, which gives a Sarah Ann Baker as Thomas Plant's wife. Martha Cooksey it is (or is it Cookney?) I can't find much else about either of them, or Thomas Cookney / Cooksey (father), apart from Thomas Plant's birth 27 Oct 1841, baptism 12 Dec 1841 and that marriage, 6 May 1861 at St Paul's church, Tipton, Staffordshire. Did they emigrate, I wonder?

Re: Elizabeth Smith b. abt 1818 Windmill End
Many thanks, NL, that does look promising, just two doors away in Langley Green, families so often stuck together and helped each other then.
In the meantime I've manage to find the Marriage Notes for the 1836 West Bromwich wedding of Warwick and Elizabeth Plant:
"Warwick PLANT, BA, otp & Elizabeth SMITH,SP,otp Wit: Samuel SKELDON & Jamima COMMANDER".
Samuel Skeldon or Skelding c. 1812-1871 ("Innkeeper and Fishmonger" living with wife Ann née Plant and daughter Sarah at the Junction Inn, Low Town, Oldbury in 1861 census) was married to Ann Plant b. 1808 from a different branch (dau. of Joseph Plant and Mary Westwood of Kingswinford / Brierley Hill), m. 30 Dec 1833 St Thomas's Dudley . Perhaps he got Warwick out of the coal mines and into fish selling? Intriguing.
Jemima Commander c. 1814-1882 was born Jemima Banks and had just married John Commander 1816-1875 on 7 March 1836 at St Thomas's, Dudley He was the son of Comfort Plant 1792-1856, sister of Dudley Plant c. 1792-1832, Warwick Plant's father. So Jemima was the wife of Warwick Plant's first cousin John.
Unfortunately, interesting though it all is, it doesn't really get us very far with Elizabeth Smith's parents. The best clue could, as you suggest, NL, be in that Smith neighbour.

I think Martha COOKSEY might be the daughter of Thomas COOKSEY and Ann COREY.
That Marriage look-up if possible, NL, might clarify.

Re: Elizabeth Smith b. abt 1818 Windmill End
Elizabeth's Smith's baptism is likely to have been in Dudley, I would guess, NL and Dianel, a couple of miles from Windmill End, Netherton, and very probably at St Thomas's. In the likely period there were four Elizabeth Smiths christened at St Thomas's according to the IGI:
1st December 1816 daughter of Benjamin Smith and Mary;
14 December 1817 daughter of Josh. Smith and Ann;
7 June 1818 daughter of Thomas Smith and Sarah;
26 December 1819 daughter of Samuel Smith and Ann
That's unless it was, say, a Presbyterian baptism in Cradley! If I were a gambling man, I'd probably plump for Thomas Smith and Sarah Walker, who had married at St Thomas's on 31 Dec 1815, I think, or Josh. (Joshua? Joseph?) and Ann. Unfortunately I can't trace any of these folk down to the censuses...
