Spending Review

Post by alicram »

I am new to this forum and have been browsing some of your replies to certain topics....and some really made me smile :-) so I am hoping you will all lighten the day tomorrow when the spending review is announced or do we think it won't be as bad as they are saying?

As an expat, I can say "What's that" - is it like a budget? :?

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Sounds exactly like it is here! Our local council has to save 7 million pounds next year - this doesn't include services such as hospitals or universities, or anything that is funded at regional level.
They're talking of reorganising the schools - which means that they will centralise things - so in our town instead of three different schools to cover all ages, there may be two schools for the younger kids and one for the older kids. I can only see that this will improve the quality of the teaching with more opportunity for specialist teachers for each subject. It may not be a problem in our town, but in some schools a class may have the same teacher for most of their subjects - even for the older kids!

One of the other ways to save money is to turn the street lights off late at night! For many years they've turned off every other street light on the quieter roads, which is okay, but not the whole lot!!! :eh:
But their latest money saving idea beats the lot!!! A lot of modern housing estates own the roads on the estate - which means they pay for the upkeep of these roads, any road cleaning, snow ploughs, lighting etc etc. A lot of local councils are now "giving" people the ownership of the roads they live on (mainly culd de sacs and quiet roads)! Now this may be okay if the roads in question were in okay condition - but after last winter there are many roads that have big pot holes in them. These new owners are not given the choice to say no to owning these roads. The government plans to close the loophole in the law that allows this - but we'll see.
