Hello everyone
My name is Eveleyn. I was born and raised in Sunderland, Co Durham but have lived away from there for many years; currently I live in Pembrokeshire.
I have been researching my family history for many years and have managed to trace most of my ancestors back to the mid 1700s and beyond in some instances. It has been fascinating and brought me several cousins who were previously unknown as well as many friends.
There are two puzzles which I have not yet managed to solve and I'm hoping that somebody in this forum may be able to help.
First -I would like to find the link between my Gt x5 grandfather, Zachariah WOTTON (c1740-1820) who lived in London and worked as a watch maker in Smithfield. Either he or his wife, Mary, had family in Tynemouth who were part of the JAMES family but I have failed to find a connecting marriage. I think that Zachariah's father had the same name and his mother was Hannah. Though I have not found Zacharaiah's parish birth record, I have found a record for the baptism of Christina WOTTON to these parents, in 1738 at St Sepulchre's, London - possibly his sister. I have also found a record of the marriage between Zachariah WOTTON and Mary STEPHENSON, 28/09/1766 in Wanstead, Essex, but though the dates make it possible, I do not know if this is my Zachariah and Mary. Zachariah was a witness at the Old Bailey in 1783 where it was stated that he had two young children. These would have been Mary Anne and her brother Robert. If it was his marriage in 1766, he waited along time to have children or there are several others I've yet to discover.
Jane was a spinster aunt to Zachariah WOTTON's daughter Mary Anne, ( 1780 - 1869)
Mary Anne WOTTON was Christened in St Sepulchre, London as well as Christ Church, Tynemouth. She married Robert STUPART , master mariner(1780-?) in 1811, Christ Church, Tynemouth. Mary Anne was the sole beneficiary in wealthy Jane JAMES's Will. Two of tMary Anne's daughters were born in Tynemouth. A third, Sophia, was born 1820 in London which had become Captain Robert STUPART's home port. In the 1841 Census Mary Anne is living as a widow in Tynemouth.
My second puzzle is where, when and how Robert STUPART died.
The link is hopefully between one of these names George JAMES+ Jane COWARD m 1701, Tynemouth >- Thomas JAMES + Margaret SIMPSON m 1742, Earsdon >- Jane JAMES (1751-1823)
and WOTTON. If it's on Zachariah's wife side it's going to be really difficult to find.
I'll be most grateful if anyone comes across any of these names they will post the information.
Kind regards to you all
Evelyn
