Any students out there?
Anyone know how much a student is likley to spend per week on top of accommodation costs? I've tried googling but really the figures are bizarre. 30 to 50 pounds on groceries per week in London. What? I can't see that 30 quid would keep body and soul together.

Thanks for the reply NL. This is London so travel alone will be 20 I think. Perhaps 80 will be enough for food and going out?

Re: Any students out there?
My son was a student in Newcadtle for 3 years and just been a year in Warwick.
Depends where they eat or what food they buy? Could may be share the costs with others too. My son did share with another lad because they ate alike, well just evening meals.
My son managed on 50 in Warwick, going out there are plenty of offers for students. Free entry in some places and cheaper nights.
Is your son going to London to study? One of my sons friends went there. I'll ask see what he thinks but the family are wealthy so money isnt an problem but can see for a guide.

Re: Any students out there?
Thanks Jo. I'm just doing my worried mother act.
This is my daughter who is going to do an MsC in north London. She only has a limited amount of money and needs to pay so much for accommodation that there is not going to be a lot left over. At least she will be warm and fairly safe in halls of residence

Re: Any students out there?

May be she (sorry about the son bit!) could get a little job? My son worked a few hours a week.
In Warwick he worked in the Uni bar.
What MsC is she doing?

Will she not get a student loan?
I know they end up owing a bit but they don't have to pay it off until earning
over a certain amount

What are the rules when you're from Iceland and studying in Britain?

One of my daughters starts Birmingham Uni.(BA Hons) next week:
She will be living at home and travelling in. She will receive a 'Grant'
0f £2906. paid in three separate installments over the term.
Sounds a lot , but we have already spent almost £100 on equipment
and books necessary for the start of the course.

Re: Any students out there?
Yes, she does get a student loan which has to be paid back when she starts work. I just don't want her to overspend if possible!
She is doing Wild animal biology, a 12 month MSc at University of London (at the Vet school).
Icelanders have to pay full fees in the UK unlike lucky people from countries in the EU who pay home fees. Full fees are about £19 000 but home ones are just over £6 000. BUT there is some regulation which states that if you live in the EEA (Iceland is) for reasons other than primarily education (well, she lives with her family) and one parent has EU nationality (me) then you qualify as a home student
That is why Icelanders mostly go to a Scandinavian country where they count as home students.
£2906 does not sound much to me! But I suppose living at home it will be OK. We have three kids and one just finished a BSc living at home (she is the one going to London) and the second one has a year to go, and the youngest has two more years of high school. She would love to go to the UK rather than take a first degree here but really it is not on so she will have to choose something on offer in iceland. I think there is a European exchage system though so she could perhaps take one year in England. She loves England!

Oh the trauma!
Took the plunge and started the online booking process for a room in halls for the "child"... only, us being foreigners and all we hit a snag. My UK bank recently changed from one card type to another and now I'm supposed to register for a security pass word, only I actually can't do that since I don't have a UK postal number
So I had to phone the rental company and explain it all and luckily it all sailed through over the phone with no problem at all.
It was lovely to speak to a real person with an English accent, unlike when I phone my bank and have a hard time understanding what advice I'm given
Still in shock at the thought of shelling out all this money every month. She had better pay me back, that's all I can say!
