I hope your youngest has managed to get grades ok -- I gather that as it is the first "electronic" year there have been a few hiccups but....

I hope they were what they wanted too!

Congrats to your daughter :P
I think she's done well too, the thourght of taking mine a year early would have driven me round the bend.

It is a shame for the others who were crying. It's one thing if they pushed themselves (with positive encouragement from their parents), but another if it's the parents who were doing most of the pushing.

There should be more people going into learning a trade instead of University. we have enough young people time wasting doing subjects that are useless,
this country is obsessed with a place at university and in my opinion there are only two important one's Oxford and Cambridge.

That is why England has gone to pot by not manufacturing enough.

OxBridge are important yes, but other universities are much better at providing certain subjects like Engineering, IMHO at least.

I do agree that too many people are going to university to study useless subjects, however I think the problem is more that there are too many "universities" now. A 50% target was stupid, and has led to a university education becoming undervalued.

I'm a radiographer and have a diploma in radiography, which was a practically based course - we were in the classroom less than 25% of the time. It is now a degree and there is far more theory than before. They were busy validating the courses at the end of my time as a student, and it was a battle between the universities who wanted as much theory as possible and the college of radiographers who wanted a balence. The first few years led to radiographers who couldn't take x-rays properly (especially in difficult situations) but knew a lot about how to manage departmental finances!
In Denmark it has gone the same way, especially as the students do not have to turn up for teaching or practical sessions (thay are supposedly mature enough to sort that out for themselves), some are really good, and others take advantage of the situation - luckily this is reflected in their exam results.

As far as Ox-bridge goes, there are other universities that offer specific courses that are better than at either university, and the people in the know, ie those that will be hiring graduates know which universities these are.

Generally I agree that practically based courses are necessary, we need electricians, plumbers, etc. We also need people who do not have any sort of vocational qualification as we need factory workers and bin men etc. These people are in some cases more necessary for a well functioning society than 100's of graduates!

I think mainly there is hardly any manufacturing left! So there are few apprenticeships! Most industry around my area have closed and still closing. Thankgoodness by hubby changed his job before it all went!

We have spent a fortune seeing my son through uni, just about to finnish his Masters. Hope it wasnt a waste of money for him!
