Is there anywhere else to search for a date of death?
I have someone in my tree that I have found a possible death for in the wills on Ancestry and free BMD, but when I try and find a death cert for him I come up a blank, don't know where to look next. It looks as though all records have been trancsribed for the year I'm interested in, where else can I look?

The person I'm looking for is:
John Howard Jinks b.1891
He emigrated to Canada in 1920, but came back 8 years later (the shipping records tie up nicely with known family and their addresses).
I have found a will in the probate calender for a John Jinks of Stourport. One of the executors is Ada Mary Jinks who is a spinster. My John Howard Jinks has a sister Ada who never married and ran a shop in Claypit Lane, West Bromwich. Unfortunately it doesn't state John's occupation or where Ada Mary lived.

Any ideas

Oops, just realized how stupid I am.... I was looking in the pre 1915 record!!!

I think I've ruled that will out - there is a death for the right area and date, but the John Jinks on that is 20 years too old - checked the image and that's the same as transcript, so I'm no further along.

I was about to say I have found the new Wills index rather frustrating.

You think you have found your ancestor and either:

a) Can't find the death in the index
b) Find it is somebody else.

It is interesting when they have died in Australia or New Zealand and the probate in England is six or seven years later.

Seems when they die in the USa or Canada the probate is fairly quick.

I've found quite a few people in there. Don't know yet how many of them I'll send off for a copy of the will though, might do them all at once, as I need to get my mum to write the check!!!

From about 1383 to 1858, all wills had to be "Proven" by local authorities.

The majority were forwarded to the PCC for approval.

All the PCC wills are in single sentence legal terminology. When you get a will of a few pages it can get a bit tedious to translate.

There are large collections in different jurisdictions but the PCC collection is the biggest and most complete.

The Genealogist have also done Edinburgh, Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Northampton and Ireland (1536-1810).

Yeh, the one will I did send of for is without punctuation. Typical legal proffession, always confusing! Saying that I didn't have too much trouble with it, but it was only a page and a half. My aunt has one that's 14 pages long!!

Still haven't found a definate date of death yet, but yes, for the time being I'll say it's completed.

That looks like it could be a possible, that would make him born in 1892, my records say 1891, but as it's a 1st quarter entry and he was born later on in the year this ties up - sounds like a good bet to me. I'll order the certificate.

Ages can vary too on death certs.
