What does the other half think?

Post by snoopysue »

In general, probably not too much
I'm talking about what your wifes, husbands, partners think of genealogy.
Are they interested, or do they think your crazy?

Mine - he rolls his eyes and asks if I'm "researching" again :-)

Don't quite know if I'd get him to come with me! Although it's abit of a jaunt as i live in Denmark, and most of my lot come from the black country. One of these days I'll get round to a dedicated genealogy trip to fill in the blanks!!

Although he has a semi famous Dane in his tree - even got a statue in the town square!!

No someone called Søren Kanne. He saved some sailors from drowning just off the north west coast of Denmark near a town called Grenaa. There's even an intercity train named after him.

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

I remember in school, they taught us about the battles, and told us the statistics and didn't really touch on the people - so I can sort of understand your wife. For me to get interested I had to start finding out about people's individual stories.

I was talking to my collegues about genealogy today, and I think they don't quite get it either :(

She appears interested for a while when I tell her something I found out, then her eyes start to glaze over and I thik I could say anything.

My fiance Craig, hasn't the slightest interest in genealogy, so when I make a new discovery he just gives me an amused smile.

Yeah, I get what you mean about that. The only "people" we really studied in school history lessons were the leaders of the Easter Rising, and due to the nature of the school (Catholic with a large percentage of those being of irish descent), it's understandable why they did actually touch on the people.

Although I always have been a bit of a history geek, but when it was boring stuff like the war of the roses, WWI, America in the 1920s I would tend to be less interested in that, and it would reflect in my grades.

As for my other half, I think she is the same as most others. When I discover something interesting she'll listen, but then her eyes start to glaze over...

The trick is to notice the eyes glazing over straight away, and stop.
I must admit my other half would say I ramble on for hours. :(
