ARC tbc - Looking help getting info on GGGGGrandfather

Post by RobertB »

Have been researching our family tree but appear to he stuck somewhere in the late 1700s and have hit a brick wall as some of the national archive series that may hold the key remains under digitisation fo the last few years.

Would appreciate some help if possible.

Trying to assemble information on Joseph Bastow born around 26 June 1785. He was in the Royal Artillery and married Catherine __________. Family records seem to indicate that Joseph died somewhere around 1855 in Greenwich but that is all I have some up with so far despite trying numerous online and family sources. Not sure if this will prove to be as far as I can get or if this is all the information I will be able to find on Joseph and Catherine but I have certainly run out of ideas at this stage.

I now have a good deal of information on two of Joseph and Catherines children namely philip (born 1806 Canterbury Kent) and jeremiah (born 1811 Canterbury Kent), both of whom followed their father into the Royal Artillery before departing for Canada in 1830 to join the Royal Quebec Volunteer Artillery during the rebellion in Canada in 1837. If any other siblings existed I am unable to identify them from public records.

Thanks in advance :-)

EDIT:
I forgot to include the fact the Joseph Bastow was enlisted into the Royal Artillery on 24 April 1805 by a Captain Munro in case thats of any help

Hi
There is a death registered.

Dec qtr 1855 Greenwich district Joseph Bastow

Would it be worth getting that to see who is named in case it is a relative who reported the death?

To the best of my knowledge he never remarried.

I will definitely follow up on the registered death and I know from a family memorandum that Josephs father died on 5 August 1823 however the memo does not mention Josephs fathers name or indeed the place of death, hence the brick wall atm

I only ask as his discharge papers mention his wife and child and the two you mention seem to be too old to be included as needing to be paid for

None of the research I have so far indicated that he married again although I do not have any details of his discharge papers. The one thing that made me think that Philip and Jeremiah had an additional sibling was that Philips memoirs indicate that he had a neice born prior to his return to UK and then on to Ireland circa 1842. If he had another brother that was aged 19 in 1832 then this would make sense. The name William would also make sense as Philip named his own son William Joseph and this tradition has continued to the current day (albeit without any clear knowledge of the origin of the tradition). Philips diary also mentions that Benjamin remarried for the second sometime after 1830 .... but to date I have been unable to find out who Benjamin was ..... perhaps it was what he called his father ?

If you can confirm that the details above relate to his discharge papers with absolute certainty then this would be a great bit of information to have.

Thanks again for the info so far :P

EDIT
Just sorted through the memoirs I have to hand and they refer to the following events:
1834 joseph william born .... 1836 benjamin married for second time
Perhaps the update for 1836 relates to someone else. I will go through the remainder of the records tomorrow to find out if I can add any further light.

Only one child is mentioned on his discharge papers.
