ARC tbc - Whiteheath Villa

Post by LeeSteventon »

Dear friends,

I am looking for information and especially photos, of Whiteheath Villa. This building was owned by Accles and Pollock and was situated between Throne Road , Newbury Lane and the Wolverhampton Road (completed in 1927) The property was finally demolished at the beginning of 1969 and it caused quite a fuss around those parts when it was because it was demolished along with other properties including Portway Hall (built 1671) and Portway Farm which dated from medieval times.

The building was home to my paternal grandfather's family for some years (see my article in the Bugle http://www.blackcountrybugle.co.uk/News/The-Steventon-family-from-Whiteheath-Villa-2.htm. My Great Grandfather (Thomas Steventon) worked at Accles's as Works Policeman (gatekeeper) and so I am guessing that for some reason, they rented this to him.

Does anyone have any more info / photos of Whiteheath Villa?

Regards

Lee

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Peter, I only see photos of the surrounding areas (bring's back some memories though :-)).

What I'm really looking for are photos of Whiteheath Villa itself.

Thanks anyway!!

I'm here, Jan. I wish I could be of more help on this, I grew up in Whiteheath during the right period, my Dad worked at Accles, but I've no recollection of Whiteheath Villa. I remember Portway Hall and even wrote to the Bugle, but to no avail. Dr Terry Daniels, the greatest authority on Oldbury history, might know more, do you want me to ask him? I've got some Steventons on my tree, Obadiah etc., but that's probably not much help in this instance!

Hi Lee, I have just sent an e-mail to Mark who now lives in Perth, Australia. They were from Whiteheath, perhaps his father will remember something :-)
If you would like to have your ancestors photo's included in our Gallery, please send me a pm.

I e-mailed Terry Daniels. He knows of no good photograph of Whiteheath Villa. The people who spoke about it in his Whiteheath book, now online, remembered it, but nobody had a picture. Terry has a map and is hoping to get hold of the sale particulars. One of his ancestors, George Cockbill, is listed as a tenant for part of the land - he grazed the animals used in his haulage business on it.

Lee, just received this from Mark..

"Mom may know about Whiteheath Villa as she had family who lived in the area. A relative of moms lived in one of the buildings associated with Portway Hall, the building was on Throne Road, we may have photographs.(Will look on Google Earth)"

...and this -

"On questioning mom she says Whiteheath Villas were a row of houses on the north side of Birchfield Lane and they were demolished. She thinks they were just along the road from the row of houses owned or rented by John Evans.
I think sometime ago I found a website Langley in old photographs and it connected to a site on Whiteheath gate
From memory whiteheath villas were listed Will look into it"

Just to put you in the picture, Mark mentions John Evans - ...here he is
