RAF - Bomber Command help please...

Post by demise of sanity »

hey , im hoping you'd be able to help me out with trying to find out where my great grandad was on my mother's side, apparently he was near Sevenoaks , Kent , but the fact that he was ground crew and worked with Stirling's and Halifax bombers doesn't tie in as there's no evidence of bomber command being in any RAF airfields in Kent in WW11 , so i need to find roughly where he was? his details are as follows-
Clarence butterfield

Air man

1095117

From Keighley ,

Called up at - 24 in 1940- 41

My hubby who flew with the Royal Air Force, albeit a lot later than WW2, says it was probably RAF Manston, which is a Master Diversion Airfield for returning Bombers who needed to land in an emergency. The Stirling and Halifax's were stationed in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. HTH from Linell.
