Just spotted all these questions and will try to answer!
You are right about the birth of James Rolinson. I went with Rolinson since that is my name and it is how he spelled it on my grandfather's birth certificate - he was literate, unlike some others who use x his mark.
I shall send for the certificate 1851 Dec Dudley 8 297.

so I wouldn't bother sending for ought until the above is looked up

I have my grandfather's birth certificate
31 Jul 1883 in Rotherham James to James Rolinson, mother Emma Rolinson formerly Ball.
I don't have any other certificates from England but have Emma's death certificate parents George Ball and Annie Hendy.
Inspiration - I have the birth cert of the one child (Delilah Rolinson) born in Scotland and it states the date of the marriage 1873 July 20th Dudley!
