I am trying to find out some information regarding my grandmother CECILIA LAWRENCE. I have her birth certificate that shows she was born on 01/05/1887. Her mother is shown as ANN MARIA LAWRENCE but there is a line through the fathers entry. Her address at time of birth shows 4 Whitethorn Street, Bromley. Could she have been illegitimate?

She married my grandfather FREDERICK JAMES KENTON (DOB 13/06/1882) on 31/10/1915 and the marriage certificate shows Cecilia's father as FREDERICK WILLIAM LAWRENCE (dead) which is strange as he was not on the birth certificate. Their address is shown as 51 Credon Rd, Plaistow.

I have no other information and cannot see her on the 1891, 1901 or 1911 censuses. maybe she spelt her first name slightly different but I cannot see any others that could match. My mother thinks she may have gone into a Dr Barnados home but I do not know if this is true. I have sent an enquiry to them to see if this brings any results.

I am lost as what to do next. Can anyone out there help me please.

Why would some put a line through the fathers name on a birth certificate. Seems a strange one to me if her mother was only married 2 years before and he was the father of Cecilia.

depend if the father was alive he could be contesting her parenthood or he might of died and poss easier to get the child adopted if no family to contest it i honestly dont know someone on site might have a more accurate reason why.

Did they get as far as putting any other info on the birth certificate eg occupations? --I thought if they were married that the husband's name had to go down as father unless he specifically argued he was not the father. As you say starnge that they presumably changed their mind part way through the process of filling in the form -- why say he is and immediately say he isn't ?

Sorry, I may have misled you. His name is NOT on the birth certificate. Where is name should be a line has been drawn through the box as if there is no father. However, on the marriage certificate he is there albiet dead.
